Acute Water Shortage Threatens Adidome Senior High School

By Benjamin Makafui Attipoe, Mafi Adidome

The Adidome Senior High School (ADISEC), located in the Central Tongu District of the Volta Region, is experiencing a severe and ongoing water shortage that is impacting students' studies. For nearly a month, the school has had no access to water because it has not been able to settle its debt of One Hundred and Four Thousand Ghana Cedis (Ghc104,000.00) with the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), resulting in the water supply being cut off.

The principal of ADISEC, Dr Vincent-Dzidula Kwasi Atiku, disclosed this during the 40th anniversary celebration and speech and award ceremony held at Adidome. 'However, thanks to the occasional involvement of the school's Parent Teacher Association (PTA) in organizing a water truck from the District Assembly to provide water to the kitchen, we would have faced a major crisis,' the Headmaster mentioned.

Elaborating on the circumstances, Dr. Atiku mentioned that in recent times, students have had to, as he described, gather in town along the main Ho-Mafi Adidome-Sogakope road, vulnerable to cars and motorcycles, in search of water every morning and evening, with some secretly engaging in social activities. According to the Headmaster, this situation has instilled fear in them, as teachers and parents, who are responsible for their care.

Dr. Atiku seized the opportunity to strongly urge the President and the Minister of Education to take immediate action by providing a mechanized industrial borehole, in order to reduce the high monthly water supply expenses imposed by the CWSA, which amount to approximately Eight Thousand Ghana Cedis (Ghc8,000.00).

The principal also addressed other significant issues confronting the institution. He mentioned that the lack of an effective internal road network, along with a faulty drainage system, is concerning. This, he added, keeps deteriorating the already poor roads, and also eroding the school's structures.

Dr. Atiku urged the President and the Minister of Roads to quickly examine the school within the Big Push Initiative, suggesting that the internal roads of the institution be paved along with the establishment of a complete drainage system across the entire school area.

Other pressing infrastructure and related requirements for the school consist of a Boys’ and Girls’ dormitory floor building with a capacity of six hundred (600) beds each, seven hundred (700) bunk beds, one thousand, five hundred (1,500) pieces of furniture, a 12-classroom block, a 33-seater bus, and an official vehicle to aid in transporting students to events and performing official tasks.

The head of ADISEC also requested the President and the GETFund Administrator to supply the school with staff bungalows in order to assist in handling the large number of students on campus.

The commemorative speech day event was centered around the theme, "Forty Years of Delivering Education at Adidome Senior High School – Successes, Obstacles, and Future Opportunities: The Contribution of Key Players." The initiative sought to collect funds for building an advanced staff common room that can accommodate 250 individuals, as teachers currently grade students' assignments beneath trees.

In the 2025 regional West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) standings, Adidome SHS secured the 6th position among 67 institutions, achieving a combined A1-C6 score of 77 percent. Dr Atiku mentioned that the school is also a significant player in the fields of Mathematics and Science.

As per his statement, ADISEC is a national icon in the Energy Commission Science contest, making it to the grand final stage, similar to the National Science and Maths Quiz competition, where ADISEC is also among the finalists for this year's top contest. 'It has required hard work and discipline for us to enhance our academic performance, and I am very thankful to the Board, my staff, and the students for this achievement,' the Headmaster mentioned.

The Director of Pre-Tertiary Education at the Ministry of Education, Nana Baffour Awuah, stood in for the Minister of Education at the event. He praised ADISEC for its outstanding discipline award and encouraged the students to aim higher.

He also assured the Ministry's dedication to making sure ADISEC remains a source of inspiration for numerous students from the Mafi Traditional Area and surrounding regions.

The Dufia of Mafi Adidome, Torgbe Kwasinyi Kakaklolo Agyeman V, and the Awafiaga of the Mafi Traditional Area, Torgbe Awudza Adabla XV, were among the traditional leaders in attendance at the event.

In a statement from their side, the traditional leaders expressed high praise for the school's founding fathers and called on the stakeholders, especially the former students, to keep making more investments and creating a stronger influence on the institution.
