Certain individuals from the Trump administration are raising concerns that their off-duty emails were inexplicably modified to implicate Democrats in the government shutdown.
As government workers are placed on furlough and the federal government continues to shut down, several Department of Education (DOE) staff members allege that their automated email responses were altered to attribute the shutdown to Democrats.
Their initial out-of-office messages did not reference Democrats or Republicans.
However, these responses now attribute the government funding shutdown directly to liberal senators.
And the staff are rushing to discover the reason behind the change in wording.
Thanks for getting in touch. On September 19, 2025, theHouse of Representativespassed H.R. 5371, a pure continuing resolution,' some Education Department staff automatic emails stated.
Unfortunately, Democratic Senators are preventing the enactment of H.R. 5371 in theSenateThis has resulted in a shutdown of funding. Because of the funding shutdown, I am currently on unpaid leave. I will address emails once government operations restart.
The linguistic shift was initially documented by journalist Marisa Kabas.

It remains uncertain who altered the wording, but it significantly differs from the conventional out-of-office communication style recommended by the department for its staff.
A DOE employee stated, 'The Department acted alone, without the knowledge or approval of the staff, and entered to modify the messages to include political language.'Wired.
Another education official told NBC News: 'None of us gave our approval for this. It is written in the first-person, as though I am the one delivering this message, and I am not. I do not agree with it. I believe it is neither ethical nor legal. I think it breaches the Hatch Act.'
The Hatch Act restricts the political involvement of federal workers.
The Education Department did not respond to the Daily Mail's request for a statement.
Slightly humorously, when the Daily Mail contacted the White House for a response, an immediate automated message was sent indicating that personnel resources are stretched.
It also criticized the Democrats for the government shutdown.

"Due to a lack of personnel caused by the Democrat Shutdown, there may be delays in the usual 24/7 oversight of this press inbox," the automated response from the White House said.
"Whilst you wait for a reply, keep in mind this situation might have been prevented if the Democrats had supported the clean Continuing Resolution to maintain government operations," it added.
White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson stated in a follow-up email to the Daily Mail, "It is an objective fact that the Democrats are accountable for the government shutdown; the Trump administration is merely informing the American public of the truth."
A spokesperson from the White House also confirmed to the Daily Mail that comparable methods were employed under the Obama and Biden administrations.
"The Biden and Obama governments consistently attributed partisan responsibility to Republicans in official fact sheets, press releases, and statements, as highlighted by numerous instances," they stated.
The Biden [Office of Special Counsel] determined that it is permissible to send official communications that reference individuals by their political affiliation.
In September 2024, the U.S. Special Counsel's Office determined that Biden's Education Secretary, Miguel Cardona, did not breach the Hatch Act by emailing federal student loan recipients that mentioned Republicans.
Other formal messages from the Biden administration also alluded to Republicans.
"The legislation aims to prevent government employees from leveraging their official power to interfere with, or influence, elections," Andrew Cherkasky, co-founder of Golden Law, stated to Fox News on Thursday.
The President of the United States, along with his representatives acting under his power, possesses an undeniable constitutional right to address the American public regarding events within their government and those accountable for them.
