Leaders from the Ife North Local Government Area in Osun State, led by Origbo Meje Obas, on Thursday issued a 21-day deadline to Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, to prove the claims he made against Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, or risk legal action.
Speaking to journalists on behalf of the Origbo Meje Obas, Oba Kehinde Adesoji, the Acting Vice Chairman of the Ife North Traditional Council and Salu of Edun Abon, accused the Oluwo of belittling the position of the Ooni and called for the withdrawal of all accusations directed at Ogunwusi.
The ruler, accompanied by the Olulamokun of Yakooyo, Oba Meshach Oyediran, and the Alakinlalu of Akinlalu, Oba Oluwabusola Oloyede, mentioned supposed previous misbehavior by Oba Akanbi and called the Oluwo's assertion that the Ooni colluded with his ex-wife to poison him as false.
Recollecting the event that resulted in Oluwo's suspension from the Council of Obas in 2019, Adesoji stated, "It is undeniable that the throne of the Ooni of Ife holds the highest authority among all Obas in Yorubaland. Documentation exists that can be checked concerning the remarks made by the Oluwo of Iwoland towards the Ooni of Ife."
It is astonishing that the Oluwo is the sole Oba in Yorubaland who alters his title every six months — from Emir of Iwo to Alaafin of Iwo — solely for excessive media attention. His behavior is tarnishing the dignity and causing mockery of the thrones of all Obas in Yorubaland.
The Oluwo of Iwoland asserted that our father, the Ooni of Ife, did not have the authority to remove him from the State Council of Obas meeting. It is important to remember that the Oluwo had conflicts with other Obas in Iwoland, including the Olu of Ileogbo, the Olowu of Kuta, the Olu of Songbe, the Agbowu of Ogbaagba, and others. The AIG Zone XI, based in Osogbo, was handling these matters.
During one of the gatherings, the Oluwo became enraged and assaulted the Agbowu from Ogbaagba, causing him harm. The Agbowu was subsequently taken to the hospital, leading to an urgent meeting called by the Ooni of Ife, who served as the council's chairperson. The Oluwo of Iwoland, the involved rulers, and the AIG were all invited.
After thoroughly hearing the explanations and justifications provided by the involved parties, the Council determined the Oluwo guilty of the accusations and decided that he should be suspended from council meetings for six months. This decision was approved by His Imperial Majesty, the Ooni of Ife, who serves as the chairman of the State Council of Obas. The Ooni of Ife garnered praise and recognition worldwide for swiftly addressing the Oluwo of Iwo.
The Salu also stated that the Oluwo's assertion that the Ooni colluded with his former wife to poison him constituted a criminal accusation.
"The one who makes a claim must provide evidence. With this in mind, we are granting the Oluwo of Iwo a 21-day deadline to write to the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, or take legal action against our father, His Imperial Majesty the Ooni of Ife, regarding these accusations. If not, the Origbo Meje Obas will pursue legal measures against the Oluwo once this period ends," he said.
Remember that Akanbi, in a different video posted on his social media platforms on Tuesday, stated that his conflict with the Ooni will persist.
