The Ebonyi State Police Command has detained the General Overseer of Champion the Truth Cathedral, Bishop Ndibueze Okorie Onyagoziri, accused of engaging in sexual activity with a 22-year-old female sickle cell patient within the state.
PUNCH Metrogathered on Thursday that the religious leader had a practice of being aware of female members of his congregation who were in various forms of distress, in order to offer them assistance.
The state's Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, verified the incident to our reporter.
He claimed the suspect was under their control while an inquiry into the issue was still in progress.
He stated, "Yes, the bishop is here with us at the police headquarters in Abakaliki. I don't have any further details since the case is still under investigation."
On Wednesday, October 1, he was taken into custody by our team and transported to the state police headquarters regarding the incident.
Nevertheless, in a viral video shared on social media, the victim stated that she began residing with the cleric due to her health condition, following the decision by the cleric and her family that she should live in the church in order to be healed from her illness through spiritual treatment.
She expressed sorrow that the "spiritual healing" did not help her condition, which had deteriorated. She claimed the bishop had promised her that a seven-day relationship with him would be sufficient to alter her genotype from SS to AA.
She added that due to her intense desire to live through the illness that had already claimed the lives of her three other siblings, she accepted the option.
She expressed sorrow that following seven days of sexual relations with the chief supervisor, her health problems worsened, and she sounded the alarm, telling her sister about it.
Her older sister, as she mentioned, became involved in the situation and demanded that she go back home because the so-called spiritual healing was no longer effective.
The victim stated, "The Bishop repeatedly warned that he would share images of our sexual encounters if I left him." As she explained, she eventually left the clergyman and returned to her village, only to discover her naked photos with him on social media, which caused various responses.
In the meantime, Onyeagoziri has refuted any involvement in sexual activity with the victim, stating that his phone was taken and individuals who stole it utilized Artificial Intelligence to publish his "altered" naked images alongside those of the girl.
He stated, "My phone was taken earlier this month, and when the people who had it failed to extort me through all their attempts, they turned to damaging my reputation. The photos you're looking at are fake. They are not genuine."
