The New Hope Student Accommodation Program is a collaboration between the government and private sector led by His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, aimed at enhancing living conditions and upgrading facilities in higher education institutions nationwide. The project intends to provide 38,400 top-tier student dormitory beds spread across 24 sites: 12 universities, 6 polytechnics, and 6 colleges of education. Each of the 24 locations will feature 1,600 bed spaces, 400 en-suite rooms with desks and chairs, 4 study rooms, a common area, dining halls and restaurants, a laundry facility, retail shops, hair salons, and public restrooms.

Family Homes Funds Limited (FHFL), in collaboration with the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), and Africa Plus Partners Nigeria Limited, is preparing to fulfill Mr. President's commitment to enhance student housing across the country via the Public Private Partnership (PPP) Renewed Hope Student Housing Programme.

The pilot initiative at the University of Calabar has already been completed by Africa Plus Partners Nigeria Limited, as illustrated in the images provided below:

The initiative has started in six different sites throughout the country, with three sites located in Northern Nigeria (Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Federal Polytechnic Bauchi, and FCT College of Education, Zuba) and three sites in Southern Nigeria (Sikiru Adetona College of Education Science and Technology Ogun, Akwa Ibom State University, and College of Education, Warri).

The College of Education, Warri hostel, and the Akwa Ibom State University are now close to being finished and ready for opening. Each of these facilities, which can accommodate 1,600 students, has been constructed according to global standards and will soon welcome students, providing secure, cost-effective, and contemporary living environments aimed at fostering academic success. This achievement represents a significant advancement in tackling one of the major issues confronting Nigeria's higher education system—the insufficient availability of student accommodation.

In addition to these two locations, four other institutions are showing clear progress within the initiative. From Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, to Sikiru Adetona College of Education Science and Technology in Ogun, FCT College of Education, and Ahmadu Bello University, construction is ongoing at various stages, each nearing completion. These sites collectively demonstrate the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr President and the commitment of Family Homes Funds Limited in partnership with TETFund and Africa Plus Partners to provide students with quality housing.

Besides the six ongoing projects, FHFL is set to begin construction in eight (8) additional institutions throughout the country. This growth marks another advancement for the program in its aim to establish contemporary hostels in all six geopolitical zones for students across the nation.

With over 2.1 million students enrolled in public higher education institutions, fewer than 15 percent have access to campus housing. The Renewed Hope Student Housing Programme represents yet another transformative, timely, and bold initiative by the President. By establishing dedicated hostels that are secure and cost-effective, the program is:

  1. lowering the pressure and dangers associated with insufficient housing outside the campus
  2. promoting better academic outcomes.
  • Generates employment opportunities and enhances regional economies
  1. Encourage private funding for educational initiatives.

Commenting on this achievement, Mr. Abdul Mutallab Mukhtar, Managing Director of Family Homes Funds Limited, stated:The inauguration of the first two sites in Warri and Akwa Ibom marks a significant milestone, not only for FHFL but also for Nigeria's higher education sector, as we offer contemporary, secure, and cost-effective dormitories, thereby ensuring students have an ideal setting to reside and study, while minimizing the challenges and dangers linked to poor housing.

With the commissioning process in Warri and Akwa Ibom nearing completion and advancements being made throughout the country, the Renewed Hope Student Housing Programme is gradually transforming the landscape of university life in Nigeria. Family Homes Funds is dedicated to providing secure and cost-effective dormitories across the six geopolitical regions, making sure that more students can anticipate a living environment that fosters their development and achievement.
