Former Chief Justice David Maraga has officially become part of the United Green Movement and declared his intention to run for president under the party's banner in the 2027 national election.
Maraga stated that his choice was guided by the party's principles, which he highlighted are based on a commitment to constitutionalism.
"I am proud to be part of the United Green Movement, one of the few political parties whose principles and values match my Ukatiba philosophy. We are now starting our efforts to campaign for our candidates in the by-elections, promoting voter registration, including those living abroad, and conducting a values-driven People's Campaign," Maraga wrote on X.
The UGM, jointly headed by former Ndhiwa MP Agostinho Neto, referred to the event as a historic moment during the ceremony in which Maraga received his presidential certificate.
"This is the face of Kenya. This is a new beginning," the party stated in a message on X.
Maraga's accreditation enhances a movement he had previously initiated by involving young individuals, commonly referred to as Generation Z, along with religious figures.
He is now joining a busy presidential contest, with President William Ruto aiming for a second term.
Other candidates include former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, who was introduced by the Jubilee Party during its recent National Delegates Conference at Ngong Racecourse.
In the meantime, the united opposition is still considering the option of presenting a single candidate.
The opposition alliance includes DAP-K headed by Eugene Wamalwa, Martha Karua's People's Liberation Party, the Democracy for Citizens Party led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and Kalonzo Musyoka's Wiper Patriotic Front.
BBoth Karua and Gachagua have expressed their desire for the top position and are striving for the opposition's unified nomination.
In a statement, UGM mentioned that the choice to lead with Maraga was in accordance with the party's constitution and endorsed by its major bodies, such as the Founders Forum, the National Executive Committee, and the National Governing Convention.
"In accordance with the decisions made by our respective party committees, we have selected him as our 2027 presidential standard-bearer. We, as a party, feel he possesses the qualities needed to rejuvenate, revive, and reconstruct Kenya," stated a message signed by secretaries general Sialo Tasur and Katto Wambua.
Maraga has been encouraging young people to sign up as voters, stating that their participation could determine the result of the election.
He has continuously encouraged Generation Z to adopt what he refers to as the #BalloRevolution, aiming to reach 15 million young voters.through the #GenZ15MillionStrong campaign.
"Those young individuals are not only eager for transformation, but they are also prepared and motivated to play an active role in bringing it about," he stated on September 29 during a speech to groups of youth in Kasarani, Westlands, and Roysambu at the start of the registration campaign.
"I encourage young individuals to make the most of this opportunity by registering as voters and informing others about this process. The future is yours, and it's essential that you take responsibility for shaping it through the upcoming elections, including by-elections and the 2027 General Elections," he said.
"I call on you to participate in large numbers by registering to help us achieve our #GenZ15MillionStrong goal. This is the only way to #ResetRestoreRebuild our cherished nation," he shared.
In addition to engaging young people, Maraga has been discreetly connecting with religious figures, civil society members, and professionals in recent months to expand his network of supporters.
Commenting on Thursday following the receipt of his certificate, the former Chief Justice pledged to promote and enhance UGM throughout the nation as he ramps up his campaign.
