Several types of cheese are being withdrawn due to concerns that they may lead to death or pregnancy loss.
The FDAissued a warning for 64lbs of 'Der Mutterschaf' cheese following the discovery of dangerous bacteria listeria in the product.
It is a Class 1recall, the top category, indicating that there is a 'reasonable chance of... significant negative health effects or death' due to eating the contaminated foods.
The cheeses were sold in 4oz to 8oz containers across seven stores in four states, the warning states, with the states includingNew Jersey, Virginia, Connecticut and Montana. The cheeses were placed on the shelves in the past month.
Consumers are urged to discard the impacted cheeses, produced by the Amish firm Goot Essa LLC, or take them back to retailers for a complete refund.
No health issues associated with the cheeses have been documented so far.
The FDA stated in its announcement that the recall was initiated following standard testing procedures.detected listeriain a single batch of cheeses, which are produced from sheep's milk.
Tests on other cheeses offered by the company, which are matured in a cave for three to four months, did not find the bacteria.

Approximately 1,250 individuals in the United States are infected by Listeria each year, according to estimates, yet it is a severe illness that leads to around 1,000 hospitalizations and roughly 170 deaths annually.
Listeria, known as Listeriosis when it leads to illness, is a severe infection that occurs after consuming food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes.
It is present in damp areas, soil, water, decomposing plant and animal matter, and can endure refrigeration and other food preservation methods.
Numerous foods may contain the bacteria, but it is commonly present in raw milk, soft cheeses, and meals that are already prepared, like pre-packaged sandwiches. Cooked shellfish, processed meats and fish, such as sushi and cut fruits, also pose a danger.
It poses a significant risk for children below five years old and elderly individuals, as they have weaker immune systems and struggle more to combat the infection.
It is also a significant concern for pregnant women, as a listeria infection can increase the likelihood of stillbirth or miscarriage.
The cheeses being recalled are from Batch 33. The 4oz version has the UPC code 810154560189, which is located under the barcode, while the 8oz versions have the UPC code 810154560196.
The source of the cheese contamination remains unknown, as they had undergone pasteurization, a method that entails rapidly heating and then cooling a food item to eliminate dangerous bacteria.

But listeriathrives in cold and moist environments, and it's possible that the bacteria transferred to equipment, which subsequently spread it to the cheeses.
Translated from Pennsylvania Dutch, the cheese's name translates to "the mother sheep cheese," with Groot Essa stating online that it was aged in a cave for three to four months prior to being sold.
Individuals affected by listeria experience symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and nausea, which can subside within a few days.
However, in severe cases, the bacteria may enter the bloodstream and lead to sepsis, a critical condition in which the body's immune system responds excessively to an infection.
A listeria infection is typically managed using antibiotics.
