The internal affairs of the National Unity Platform (NUP) became the main topic on NBS Barometer during Tuesday night's episode, as the party's procedure for distributing MP party cards for the 2026 election caused significant controversy. In this context, experienced legislator Hon. Medard Lubega Sseggona provided his first in-depth reaction to being denied the party's symbol for Busiro East.
Keeping a calm and collected attitude, Hon. Sseggona stated he was not taken aback by the party's choice. "I am not resentful; I am actually in a better place. I am not angry with my NUP party, and I have inner peace," he started. "I noticed the signs, so I wasn't surprised by my party's decision."
He explained his involvement in the screening process, mentioning that he submitted what he believed were the "best" qualifications, but was later labeled as arrogant by the press. "I was one of those who helped draft the NUP party constitution, which outlined the procedure for choosing standard-bearers, although it has not been implemented yet," he said.
After the party's decision was finalized, Sseggona revealed his next step. "I don't have any personal agenda in the Parliament of Uganda. I have consistently been assigned by different stakeholders, the party, and the residents of Busiro. Now that the party has taken its stance, I will be meeting with the people of Busiro."
Other guests on the program mostly expressed backing for Sseggona, casting doubts on the NUP's tactical approach.
NRM's Hon. Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo provided a bipartisan endorsement, stating, "Hon. Sseggona is one of the most intelligent individuals we know. When it comes to legal expertise, there's no question about his abilities. He belongs to NUP, yet even members of NRM occasionally turn to him for legal advice. They simply don't appreciate those who are both bright and vocal."
Political commentator Charles Rwomushana described the move as a tactical setback for the opposition. "You can't be part of the fight to gain power while ignoring individuals like Sseggona; he has strong expertise," he stated.
NUP Member of Parliament Hon. David Kalwanga stated that all participants in the vetting process should accept its outcomes, whereas former NUP member Moses Bigirwa claimed the action was expected, saying, "I saw how my colleagues were acting, and I understood I couldn't remain in the party."
The NBS Barometer, presented by Adam Kungu every Tuesday at 10:00 PM, is exactly where these kinds of important and uncensored discussions on Ugandan politics take place. For Ugandans who want to stay informed about the political developments as they happen, the NBS Barometer offers a weekly, detailed analysis that goes beyond public campaigns to explore the key behind-the-scenes factors, such as the internal party conflicts discussed last night, which will ultimately influence the race's result.
