Accra, October 2, GNA – The pivotal Fourth World Conference on Women organized by the United Nations (UN) took place in Beijing, China in 1995.
In the last thirty years, China has followed the principles set forth at the 1995 Conference and achieved significant progress in the advancement of women within the nation.
At the 2015 Global Leaders’ Meeting focused on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment, as well as the 2020 high-level gathering commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women at the UN General Assembly, President Xi Jinping outlined China's views on gender equality and the comprehensive development of women, and suggested organizing another Global Leaders’ Meeting on women in 2025.
Every October, China will host the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women in Beijing once more, collaborating with nations across the globe to create a new section in the progression of women's issues worldwide.
China has recently published the White Paper titled "China's Progress in Women's Comprehensive Development in the New Era."
It provides a structured overview of China's perspective on women's advancement, highlighting significant progress in achieving gender equality and women's growth since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, particularly within the last five years.
Noteworthy is China's beneficial role in the worldwide advancement of women's issues.
This white paper offers a clear illustration of China's governance model for the global community, introduces fresh components to human civilization, and paves the way for a new approach.
The progress of women in the nation has made a significant overall advancement, and the socialist approach to women's development tailored to Chinese characteristics has shown strong vitality and distinct benefits.
In the political domain, the percentage of women among delegates at the 14th National People's Congress reached 26.5 percent, marking an increase of 1.6 percent from the prior session. Meanwhile, women representatives in county and township people's congresses made up 31.6 percent and 32.4 percent, respectively.
In the institutional sector, the "Law of the People's Republic of China on the Protection of the Rights and Interests of Women",Revised in 2022, it states that women have the same rights as men in every area of political, economic, cultural, social, and family life.
In the healthcare sector, the average lifespan for women has surpassed 80 years, while the maternal death rate has decreased to 14.3 per 100,000 births.
In the field of education, the percentage of female university students has risen to 49.9%, while the share of female scientific researchers has climbed to 45.8%.
In the economic field, China has achieved the biggest poverty reduction effort in human history, with 690 million women also progressing toward a moderately prosperous society.
The proportion of women in the workforce stands at 63.7 per cent, significantly higher than the global average of 47.3 per cent.
Women are involved in finance and the internet, making up 57.7 percent and 55 percent of the workforce in these industries, respectively.
China has backed the efforts of UN Women, collaborated with UNESCO to establish the Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education, assisted developing nations in carrying out 100 maternal and child health initiatives, and provided training for more than 200,000 female professionals across over 180 countries and regions.
China is encouraging eco-friendly innovations in developing nations, supporting women in improving their lives and work. For instance, Juncao technology has allowed women in 106 countries and regions to remain at home, care for their children, and generate income.
Chinese women are also actively involved in upholding global peace and stability, with over 1,000 female soldiers and more than 100 female police officers deployed in United Nations peacekeeping missions.
Ghana is also known for making a conscious effort to support and advance the position of women within the nation.
Both the Ghanaian and Chinese governments are dedicated to reducing the gender gap, advancing gender equality, and supporting the comprehensive growth of women.
The global community is delighted by the outstanding accomplishments of Ghanaian women across multiple domains. As Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the first female Vice President of Ghana, stated in her first speech: “Genuine advancement means that women are not just seated at the table but enabled to transform it.”
Her achievement signifies a turning point for women's involvement in politics in Ghana, as female leadership gains more acknowledgment.
On this year's Africa Women's Day, Ghana organized a top-level national launch of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act.
Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, referred to the enactment of the Affirmative Action Act as a landmark achievement for women in Ghana, marking a new era in the country's dedication to advancing gender equality, participatory governance, and societal change.
In July, during the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, the Black Queens secured third place. Two members of the National Team were named in the tournament's best squad.
Their exceptional performance reignited the hope and belief in the future of women's football in Ghana.
In September, three female students from the University of Ghana's Graduate School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences secured first place in the GC69 Female Nuclear Competition, which was held by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Their behavior has inspired women across the globe to commit themselves to the areas of science and technology.
It is strongly held that the holding of the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment will enable China and Ghana to enhance and broaden their collaboration in the areas of gender equality and women's empowerment.
This will further enhance the promotion of women from both nations, enabling them to take on a more significant role in their countries' political, economic, and social development initiatives.
