The leader of the Northern Peoples Union, Alhaji Abu Mohammed, on Wednesday urged Nigerians to avoid divisive behaviors and promote peace, unity, and tolerance as the country celebrated its 65th Independence Day.
At a press conference in Kaduna, Mohammed stated that the Union was formed to encourage national unity and combat social issues like tribalism, religious intolerance, and moral decline, which he claimed have been hindering Nigeria's development.
He observed that the organization, which gathers members from a wide range of civil society groups and non-governmental entities globally, is committed to freeing people from the influence of anti-democratic forces and promoting a new culture based on justice, fairness, and appreciation for human dignity.
He stated that the group is not a political organization but a social initiative focused on reviving national values and fostering a renewed feeling of identity among Nigerians.
The Union was established based on the values of teamwork, togetherness, and a shared commitment to fight against tribal divisions, religious prejudice, and ethical decline.
"We serve as a symbol of hope for Nigerians, dedicated to fostering tolerance, enhancing national unity, and reducing the hardships faced by citizens due to social issues and structural problems," Mohammed stated.
The Northern Peoples Union, he emphasized, had intentionally created programs aimed at young Nigerians through empowerment projects, skill development efforts, and mentorship prospects to equip them for the future.

He further stated, 'We also support projects that connect different groups and promote openness among various ethnic, religious, and regional communities.'
The head of the NPU highlighted that the Union's goal is to achieve a fully united Nigeria, where peace, affection, and unity thrive, and where "no individual is overlooked."
A key point in his address was Mohammed's praise for Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, whom he referred to as demonstrating "maturity and composure" in managing the recent political turmoil and the imposition of a state of emergency in the region.
He mentioned that the governor's self-control during provocation prevented violence and set an example of the leadership Nigeria desperately requires.
"At this point, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to His Excellency, Siminalayi Fubara, the Governor of Rivers State, for his remarkable display of maturity, composure, and dedication to peace during the imposed state of emergency," he stated.
Although certain leaders might have turned to conflict or aggression in these situations, Governor Fubara took a more noble approach, focusing on peace, putting aside personal pride, and safeguarding lives and assets. His behavior demonstrates the kind of leadership our country urgently requires.
Mohammed called on all levels of government—federal, state, and local—to strongly support inclusiveness, acceptance, and harmonious living. He stated that intentional funding should be directed towards areas like agriculture, technology, financial access, and practical training to ensure long-term opportunities for the population.
He cautioned that Nigeria should never be permitted to split along political, ethnic, or religious divisions.
Rather, we should view our diversity as an asset, showing respect for each other's values, customs, and practices. Conscious initiatives need to be directed towards enabling people by enhancing their skills in areas with high demand, expanding agriculture, promoting financial access, and exploring other sustainable routes to success.
He argued that fostering unity and decreasing poverty are essential in avoiding violent disputes and secessionist movements throughout the nation.
In addition to the government, the NPU president also called on regular Nigerians—those within the country and those living abroad—to prioritize the nation and set aside individual ambitions. He encouraged them to come together with "open minds and genuine hearts" to address the national and sub-regional issues endangering the federation.
"Only through collaboration can we genuinely access the immense gifts that the Almighty God has granted this nation," he emphasized.
We should keep in mind that Nigeria is our only home, and this country surpasses any one person. Let us transcend personal goals and unite for the benefit of everyone.
Mohammed, accompanied by other members of the Union's executive council during the meeting, ended by urging a revival of patriotism among the youth.
He pointed out that Nigeria's variety should be honored instead of being used for personal political benefits.
