
The Elders Advisory Council of the Ogun State Government has hailed the Gateway International Airport in Ilishan-Remo as the finest investment made by the administration under Dapo Abiodun.
In a message posted on X on Thursday, the Ogun State Government stated that the comment was made by the Chairman of the Governor's Elders Advisory Council, Chief Olu Okuboyejo, while he was conducting a tour of the recently finished airport.
Okuboyejo, who accompanied other council members during the visit, expressed satisfaction with the advanced facilities at the airport, mentioning that they could match some of the top airports globally.
"It's a fantastic airport. I've traveled across the entire world, and in all these places, I'm proud to say that what I saw here today is comparable and even superior to many other airports," he stated.
Calling the project a forward-thinking heritage, Okuboyejo mentioned that the airport would bring lasting economic advantages to the state.
It is the most beneficial long-term investment. As it expands over the years, its developmental achievements become so impressive that you can't even imagine them," he stated. "This airport has been designed for growth and development over the next 20 to 30 years.
The senior political figure called on the state government to obtain the endorsement of the International Civil Aviation Organisation, allowing the facility to handle international flights, which he claimed would bring in more income and make the airport financially independent.
He praised Governor Abiodun for emulating the path of forward-thinking leaders who established top-tier airports, highlighting that the facility would serve as a permanent testament to his leadership.
Individuals who have constructed famous airports around the globe are still remembered today, and Governor Abiodun will not be different," he stated. "We, his advisors, the elders, are pleased that our own son is accomplishing this during our lifetime.
Additionally, the Transportation Commissioner, Engr. Gbenga Dairo, stated that the airport was planned to act as a central initiative for industrial development throughout the state, especially in the Remo Economic Cluster.
He confirmed that the airport's facilities, such as the passenger terminal, cargo storage areas, standalone power plant, fire station, and control tower, were all prepared for use.
The Airport Manager, Captain Dapo Olumide, revealed that representatives from the appropriate aviation regulatory bodies were already present and mentioned that the initial commercial flight would start next week on Tuesday, noting that travelers from Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, Abeokuta, and other areas of the state had started making reservations.
Gateway International Airport was officially given an Aerodrome certificateOperational Permitby the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) in August 2025.
Passenger flight operationsare scheduled to begin on October 7, 2025, with Value Jet Airline initiating passenger services twice a week. The airport is conveniently situated along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, close to the Sagamu Interchange, catering to commercial, freight, and passenger demands, and is anticipated to reduce traffic at Lagos airport while boosting regional economic development.
