Leaders from the Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State, through the Origbo Meje Obas, expressed disapproval on Thursday of the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, stating that his actions are "bringing shame and mockery to the thrones of all Obas in Yorubaland."
The rulers issued the Oluwo with a 21-day deadline to either prove or retract his claims against the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, or risk facing legal consequences.
On behalf of the group, Oba Kehinde Adesoji, the Acting Vice Chairman of Ife North Traditional Council and Salu of Edun Abon, criticized the Oluwo for "disrespecting the Ooni's throne" and called for the withdrawal of all offensive statements.
Surrounded by the Olulamokun of Yakooyo, Oba Meshach Oyediran, and the Alakinlalu of Akinlalu, Oba Oluwabusola Oloyede, Adesoji highlighted the Oluwo's previous disputes and rejected his recent assertion that the Ooni colluded with his ex-wife to poison him.
The supremacy of the Ooni of Ife's throne as the leader of all Obas in Yorubaland is undeniable," Adesoji stated. "There are documents in the archives that confirm the Oluwo of Iwoland's outbursts against the Ooni of Ife. Hence, it is astonishing that the Oluwo is the only Oba in Yorubaland who changes his title every six months—from Emir of Iwo to Alaafin of Iwo—just to get excessive media attention. The Oluwo's behavior is damaging the reputation and causing mockery of all the thrones of Obas in Yorubaland.
Adesoji also looked back at the event that caused Oluwo's suspension from the Osun State Council of Obas in 2019, following an alleged attack on the Agbowu of Ogbaagba during a reconciliation meeting.
"It was during the meeting that the Oluwo became angry and confronted the Agbowu from Ogbaagba, causing him harm. He was subsequently taken to the hospital, leading to an urgent meeting called by the Ooni of Ife, who served as the Council's chairman. After carefully hearing the explanations and justifications from both sides, the Council determined the Oluwo was at fault and decided he should be suspended for six months. The ruling was approved by His Imperial Majesty, the Ooni of Ife, and garnered widespread approval around the world for acting swiftly," he stated.
Regarding the latest accusations, Adesoji stated, "The Oluwo's assertion that the Ooni colluded with his former wife to poison him is a serious claim, and the person making the accusation must provide evidence. With this in mind, we are granting the Oluwo of Iwo 21 days to contact the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, or to take legal action against our father, His Imperial Majesty the Ooni of Ife, regarding these claims. If not, the Origbo Meje Obas will pursue legal measures against the Oluwo once this deadline has passed."
Chief Akanbi, meanwhile, has stated in a new video shared on his social media platforms on Tuesday that he will keep his conflict with the Ooni going.
In the video, he stated: “I supported Ooni Adeyeye, but since he shares the same beliefs as the idols and me, God has elevated me above those idols as a ruler. Ooni does not want me to share the story and is seeking my demise.”
He arranged for a woman I had never met to be sent to me. It was a scheme. She was in my home, and they were speaking with her to manipulate me through videos and other means. The so-called ex-wife would ask me questions, and they were in contact with her. She stayed for more than three years. She had a child, and I don't even know if it's mine. She poisoned me twice, they planned an assassination attempt, and they carried out other actions to try to kill me, but all failed.
He further alleged that Oba Ogunwusi offered shelter to his former wife following her departure from his palace.
"When I discovered the secret and expelled this woman, she went to meet the Ooni at a hotel. It's the same Ooni who provided an apartment for the woman and her child. This conflict won't end, and no one can kill me," Oluwo stated.
