For nearly half a century, Australians rushed to Manly Waterworks in theSydneycoastal neighborhood during the summer for school break and weekend entertainment, year-end events, and birthday celebrations.
First launched in 1981, its renowned water slides appeared in the 1983 teenage film BMX Bandits, marking Kidman's initial on-screen appearance.
A memorable scene depicted Kidman and her group of outlaws speeding into the park on their BMX bikes to escape the police, then zooming down the water slides using the bikes to elude capture.
Following a lengthy sequence of leaseholders, a short name change, and a temporary shutdown in 2015, The Boathouse Group assumed control of Manly Waterworks in 2021 once the location became available.FacebookA marketplace available for $950,000.
The hospitality company announced this week that Manly Waterworks will be torn down following a determination that its water slide facilities are hazardous.
It followed the water park's closure in mid-February for the rest of the summer because of 'required scheduled maintenance'.
"After 45 years, Manly Waterworks has reached the end of its lifespan and will be shutting down the pumps permanently," states its website.
Engineers have determined that the structure is no longer secure for sliders, with demolition set to begin at the end of September.
Even though this Manly establishment will no longer be visible on West Esplanade, the memories will endure for future generations of Manly residents and tourists who have appreciated the water park throughout the years.
Additional plans for the website are still pending confirmation.
A full renovation of the outdated waterpark was considered not only economically impractical but also beyond the operator's knowledge in food and beverage.
"I believe that if the structure remained intact, there would be no question about our continued operation, as it attracts a distinct customer base," said a spokesperson from the Boathouse Group. Manly Observer.
But in the end, we are fundamentally a hospitality food and beverage business, and we are not an amusement park enterprise, so it was truly not the main area of our expertise. Basically, we operated the slides for a few years, and we believe we did a decent job, but in the end, that wasn't our primary business.
The Daily Mail reached out to The Boathouse Group for additional remarks.
The shutdown occurs seven years following the closure of the adjacent Manly Sea Life Sanctuary, which had been operational for over five decades.
Supporters were disappointed upon learning about the water park's closure.
"A sorrowful day for Manly," a woman wrote.
Another addition: "I have been here for 23 years, and activities I once loved or anticipated sharing with my kids are now disappearing."

For some, the news evoked sentimental recollections.
"My initial job was at Manly Waterworks in 1985. I earned $6.30 per hour working on weekends and holidays," another person mentioned.
Nevertheless, not everyone felt sorrow at its departure.
"Frankly, it was never anything remarkable. Just a few slides packed into a small space with long queues during the summer," one resident wrote.
Another addition: "Good, that noisy water feature is so outdated and obsolete. Goodbye!"
