The leader of the Scottish government yesterday dismissed demands to exclude potential rises when the Scottish Budget is presented in January.

Mr. Swinney also faced criticism for reductions in college funding, with allegations that he has made households deal with increased costs and lower quality public services.
Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay said: ‘The SNPHis disorganized and reckless approach has resulted in fewer funds for schools, hospitals, roads, and all other areas that require improvement.
‘Public services keep declining yet taxes, household bills and everyday costs continue to rise.
‘It’s a fact, whether John Swinney likes it or not, that people in Scotland are worse off after 18 years of the SNP.
Currently, in the upcoming Labour and SNP budgets, employees might encounter a dual impact of tax increases.


Is this all John Swinney can provide for Scotland: increased costs and poorer public services?
All individuals in Scotland who earn over £30,300 currently pay a higher amount in income tax compared to people living in England.
During her address at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool, Ms Reeves stated that she aims to maintain taxes, inflation, and interest rates "as low as possible," while suggesting potential additional tax increases by noting that global developments have complicated the government's decisions and that the economy has suffered from long-term harm.
At the First Minister's Questions session yesterday, Mr. Findlay stated that Scots are currently 'in a worse financial position' compared to when the SNP took office in 2007.
His data comes from an examination of official figures indicating that the average disposable household income per person in Scotland was £22,908 for the latest year, 2023.
As per the Conservative analysis, when accounting for inflation, the amount would have been £22,984.
Mr. Swinney stated that he recognized the financial strain on families and mentioned that eliminating peak rail charges on ScotRail services could help commuters traveling between Edinburgh and Glasgow save more than £12 daily. He also asserted that Brexit has left each of us poorer.
Mr. Findlay said to him: "Rachel Reeves has been requested to exclude tax increases. She was questioned at least ten times, yet she refuses to do so."

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar stated that an Audit Scotland report indicated a 20 percent reduction in college funding over four years.
Claiming that Mr Swinney's administration supports universities, he questioned, "Why does this arrogant, privileged SNP government fail to acknowledge the worth of Scotland's colleges?"
Mr. Swinney remarked that it was not a "good image" for him, as a "state school student," to be told about elitism, hinting at Mr. Sarwar's schooling at the private Hutchesons Grammar in Glasgow.
