Punch Online reported on September 9 that, as part of initiatives to enhance local healthcare services, the Anambra State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, in collaboration with the State Ministry of Health and the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, conducted interviews for the hiring of Community-Based Health Workers.

The program is a component of the state government's actions to enhance primary healthcare services by sending trained staff to local areas.

The Executive Secretary of the ASPHCDA, Chisom Uchem, highlighted during the hiring process that the position is community-focused and involves significant responsibility.

Uchem stated, "The initiative would help close the gap between community members and healthcare centers, making sure essential services arrive at the local level."

We call on those who are successful to perform their responsibilities with empathy and honesty; failure to do so might result in loss of life. Anyone found using fake credentials during the hiring process will be subject to legal consequences.

Additionally, during the exercise, the Permanent Secretary from the Ministry of Health, Dr. Uchebo Obiageli, mentioned that the staff would help in treating the ill, directing residents to medical facilities, and assisting pregnant women to have secure childbirths.

Obiageli stated that the initiative aims to lower maternal mortality rates, stillbirths, and other avoidable fatalities.

"At least 10 medical personnel are anticipated to be allocated to every ward throughout the state to help alleviate the shortage of staff at Primary Healthcare Centres," she further stated.

PUNCH Online states that the Anambra recruitment initiative, which involves assigning a minimum of 10 health workers per ward, seeks to bridge this gap and enhance the connection between homes and medical facilities. Community health workers will be responsible for directing people towards healthcare, assisting pregnant women, helping the ill, and providing fundamental health services within their communities.

Present at the exercise were the Head of the Community Health Department, ASPHCDA, Dr. Ngozi Okeke, Mrs. Cecilia Peter-Okoye, Head of Administration, ASPHCDA, Mrs. Amaka Maduka, Head of Accounts, ASPHCDA, and Mr. Casmir Mabia, Head of Planning, Research, and Statistics Department, ASPHCDA.
