A well-known activist and head of the Northern Stakeholder Consultative Forum, Alhaji Yerima Shettima, has urged Nigerians to stay hopeful and united as the nation celebrated its 65th year of independence, emphasizing that the country's endurance through years of challenges is "something to be honored."
On Wednesday, Shettima addressed a vibrant gathering organized by the Capacity Movement in Kaduna, where he was among hundreds of Nigerians celebrating the achievement and considering the nation's future.
He believes that Nigeria's capacity to stay united as a single nation amid significant obstacles is evidence of the population's shared resolve.
Regardless of our feelings, the reality that we continue as a nation in our effort to create a unified country is something to be honored.
"Even when opposing forces attempt to break us apart, we have remained united. This demonstrates strength," he insisted.
The advocate, who has consistently spoken out on national matters, pointed out that although Nigeria's path has faced numerous challenges, there is hope under the present leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Shettima referred to Tinubu as a "genuine democrat and someone shaped by hardship," highlighting that the liberties and civil rights currently experienced were not easily obtained.
"Currently, we experience liberties that were not available to us in earlier times. The financial condition is gradually getting better, and the instability that had affected the North for many years is now being tackled with determination. We need to keep backing the government so that it can carry out its duties," he advised the joyous audience.
On mounting calls for him to throw his hat into the political ring ahead of the 2027 general elections, Shettima was guarded but did not shut the door.
It's premature to turn this into a political matter. I've heard the demands, and I value them. When the appropriate moment arrives, I will address it properly.
Nevertheless, he encouraged Nigerians to maintain hope and not abandon their trust in the initiative known as Nigeria.
"There is a light visible at the end of the passage. Regardless of how dark it appears, we should keep moving forward with optimism, as improved times lie ahead," he stated.
At the event, the Capacity Movement—a youth-led group promoting trustworthy leadership—officially backed Shettima as a candidate for the Kaduna Central Senatorial seat in 2027.
The national leader of the movement, Comrade Shehu Sani Sado, stated that the backing resulted from thorough discussion and highlighted Shettima's agreement with the organization's principles.
"Capacity is more than just a title. It represents trustworthiness, responsibility, forecasting, skill, innovation, honesty, perseverance, and flexibility (CAPACITY), and Yerima Shettima meets all these criteria," he stated.
He observed that the movement's support aimed to revive young people's involvement in politics and encourage effective leadership throughout Nigeria.
"We are convinced that Yerima is among the rare leaders capable of genuinely reforming the system and bringing back order. That's why we are fully supporting him," he stated.
Sado also emphasized the significance of commemorating national milestones, contending that neglecting them would undermine Nigeria's historical legacy.
"It would be unfair to our ancestors if we fail to acknowledge how much progress we've made. We, the young people, need to understand that no one else will come and build Nigeria for us. It is our duty," he stated.
The gathering, which intentionally aligned with Nigeria's 65th anniversary of independence, focused on rekindling hope for young Nigerians and recognizing the contributions of previous heroes.
Organizers stated that holding the event on October 1 was meaningful—intended to remind people of the perseverance, foresight, and hardships that led to the country's founding in 1960.
Individuals took part in events including cycling, motor racing, musical shows, and religious ceremonies aimed at promoting national peace and stability.
