A new graduate from the Osun State College of Technology in Esa-Oke, known only as Taoreed, has been confirmed deceased following a confrontation between opposing cult groups in the area, where he was hit by a stray bullet.
PUNCH Metrowas informed that the incident took place on Tuesday, September 23, not long after he obtained his National Youth Service Corps call-up letter from the institution.
It became clear that chaos began on the school grounds on Monday, September 22, when gunfire was heard as some senior students were celebrating their graduation.
A student from the school, who spoke with our reporter on Thursday but chose not to be named, stated that a final-year student was killed during the incident by suspected members of a cult.
He stated, "We were leaving after our exams in the afternoon when we suddenly heard gunshots outside the school grounds. Everyone rushed to take cover. Later, we found out that a senior student had been killed by cult members. It was a very distressing event."
In a video viewed by our reporter on Thursday, students were seen rushing to safety at the school entrance.
The student remembered that a comparable event occurred at the beginning of last year, mentioning that gunfire was heard near the school grounds during one of their sign-out festivities.
A police official, however, revealed that Taoreed's death took place the next day, during an act of retaliation on the Ilesa–Esa-Oke Road.
As per the report, Taoreed went to the school on Tuesday to retrieve his NYSC call-up letter and was waiting by the roadside to catch a bus home when armed individuals started shooting.
It was a retaliation following the death of a final-year student on Monday. The cult members had aimed their attacks at their opponents in the area where Taoreed was attempting to get on a bus. They began firing, and a stray bullet struck him. Upon hearing the gunfire, he fled for safety without realizing he had been injured. He was later discovered in a nearby bush, having crawled there but remaining unresponsive.
It was also discovered that his summons letter was located inside a black shoulder bag he was holding during the event.
Upon being contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Abiodun Ojelabi, verified the incident.
He referred to the event as a conflict between cults, while mentioning that two individuals lost their lives.
"It was a conflict between two groups. Two students lost their lives. One died immediately, while the other passed away in the hospital. Ongoing actions are being taken to apprehend those responsible," he revealed.
Throughout the years, competition among confraternities has resulted in the deaths of several students, particularly in areas where higher education institutions are located. These killings are frequently associated with struggles for dominance, acts of retaliation, or efforts to attract university students into their organizations.
PUNCH Metroreported in June that a male adult, whose identity has not yet been determined, was feared deceased following a violent confrontation involving individuals suspected to be members of opposing cult groups at Osun State Polytechnic, Iree.
Several credible sources from the polytechnic, who requested to remain unnamed, reported that the confrontation included members of the Eiye and Aye secret societies.
They also mentioned that four additional individuals were hurt during the confrontation near the primary entrance of the facility.
