The Nigerian Ports Authority's Managing Director, Dr Abubakar Dantsoho, states that Abuja's central position and strong agricultural-related potential make it essential to enhance the agency's assistance in the Federal Government's efforts to increase non-oil income.
A statement released on Thursday revealed that Dantsoho shared this information during a speech at the Abuja International Trade Fair.
He stated that Abuja's central location within the country is crucial for the NPA's updated trade promotion plan, which focuses on improving connections between ports and the inland areas.
"Abuja's central position offers a smooth connection with the unique strengths found in every part of the country, which can be utilized to support an increase in both the quantity and worth of Nigeria's exports," Dantsoho stated.
Under his guidance, the NPA is increasing its initiatives to promote non-oil export development by utilizing Abuja's strategic position and agricultural capabilities. By accessing these assets, the organization seeks to foster equitable economic growth and enhance both the worth and quantity of Nigerian exports.
In an effort to boost efficiency and openness, Dantsoho revealed that the NPA is moving towards a single Ports Community System ahead of the National Single Window project. This online system will link all participants in the export supply chain, government departments, transport companies, exporters, and importers, creating a more efficient and less cumbersome trade process.
As Nigeria's leading platform for trade facilitation, Dantsoho stated that the NPA is proud to be linked with the Abuja International Trade Fair, referring to trade as "the most effective means of achieving Nigeria's economic goals."
He further extended an invitation to interested parties to examine the streamlined export procedures and additional prospects provided by the NPA.
"In our effort to support the local economy by encouraging a balanced trade, we created the Export Processing Terminal to make the previously complicated process of exporting Nigerian products easier," he said.
He stated that the EPTs function as comprehensive centers for consolidating cargo, loading, paperwork, packaging, certification, and further shipping via electronic notifications to ports, achieving exceptionally fast processing times. This, he pointed out, removes redundancies and bureaucratic delays that had previously made Nigerian exports less competitive in the international market.
To enhance the connection between ports and the hinterland, and to establish routes for small and medium businesses to engage in the export process, the NPA has designed the EPTs to work smoothly with Domestic Export Warehouses, in coordination with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council and Inland Dry Ports.
"In line with the Federal Government's economic stabilization plan, we are merging our different operational channels into one transaction platform called the Ports Community System. This will establish the basis for the National Single Window, which effectively removes transparency issues and delays caused by unnecessary human involvement," he added.
Dantsoho highlighted that the National Single Window is recognized worldwide as a leading example for streamlining trade, as it links all parties involved in the supply chain for smooth communication and achieving optimal efficiency.
He also confirmed that the NPA is implementing steps to connect those who generate value in the most remote areas of the interior with demand centers around the world.
"The NPA's doors are always open for collaborations," he assured investors.
