Renowned Ondo prophet, Samson Oluwamodede of the Prayer Centre Church of God (PCCG), and theGovernor Lucky Aiyedatiwa-The administration has had conflicts regarding the 'bad state' of roads, especially in Akure South Local Government Area of the state.
In a widely shared video from his church on Thursday, Prophet Oluwamodede expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of the Akure/Idanre (Oke Aro) road, calling it a dangerous hazard for drivers.
He claimed that multiple lives and vehicles had been lost because of the terrible state of the road, which he stated had turned almost impossible to traverse.
Mr. Governor (Aiyedatiwa), do you recall when I brought up the poor condition of the road and you promised to reach out to your S.A. regarding Infrastructure.
"But the road has become even worse. If you witness how people are losing their lives on this road, especially at Owe Akala, Idanre garage, and Abiodun junction leading to the new town area, it's horrifying. Many commercial motorcyclists (Okada riders) are dying, trucks keep crashing, causing injuries and damaging property," the religious leader expressed sorrowfully.
Oluwamodede, who claimed he had tried multiple times to contact the Governor, stated that if no action was taken by Sunday, he would gather resources to perform 'surface repairs' on the road himself to prevent further humiliation.
I'm bringing your focus to the road, Mr. Governor, as we still have faith in you. Take action now because the road is in terrible condition. Unfortunately, this is occurring on the streets of Akure. I hope the governor would consider driving down to witness the challenges we are experiencing. Please, Mr. Governor, I am highlighting the poor state of the road.
"I have seen the leadership of Governors Olusegun Agagu, Olusegun Mimiko, the late Rotimi Akeredolu, and now you (Aiyedatiwa) are the fourth. I urge you to create a change. This isn't about politics but the hardships faced by the people. If I don't see results, I will bring in someone to just do superficial work," he emphasized.
The Nation states that the Akure/Idanre road directly connects to Prophet Oluwamodede's large church.
Nevertheless, in a quick reply, the Commissioner for Infrastructure, Lands and Housing, Mr Ayorinde Abiola Olawoye, blamed the project's delay on continuous rain, stating that construction is a slow process with specific phases.
"At Oke Aro, the contractor, who started work less than six months ago, has already completed more than 8,000 meters of lined drains – approximately 4km of the 10km section. This is a remarkable achievement in such a short period," he said.
Olawoye stated that the process of building roads starts with hydraulic projects such as drains and culverts, then moves on to earthworks, and finally the pavement layer, emphasizing that omitting any steps could affect the standard of work.
"Although the prophet's concerns are reasonable, continuous rain has made grading or temporary repairs unfeasible. Implementing such actions during the rainy season would make things worse. Now that the rain is decreasing, the contractor has started temporary repairs to improve access until the complete project is finished," he added.
Aiyedatiwa launched the expansion of the 10-kilometre Akure-Idanre road in April.
The initiative, aimed at reducing heavy traffic and enhancing economic growth, will include a 28-meter-wide road, advanced traffic management systems, and solar-powered lighting.
