Minister of Works David Umahi said that President Bola Tinubuhas requested the continuation of all road projects that were previously supported by the NNPCL tax credit.
Umahi, who admitted to financial difficulties after the NNPC tax credit funding was halted, stated that President Tinubu continues to prioritize the construction of long-lasting roads despite some negative feedback.
In 2021, the NNPCL initiated the first phase of financial support for road projects, allocating N621.24bn to restore 21 roads throughout the six geopolitical zones.
The roads impacted included the Ilorin–Jebba–Mokwa/Bokani Junction Road (Sections I & II) in Kwara and Niger States, the Suleja–Minna Road, and temporary fixes on the Mokwa–Makera–Tegina route heading toward the Kaduna state boundary.
Inspections revealed that in 2023, the NNPCL was authorized to allocate N1.9 trillion for the rebuilding of 44 federal roads, such as the East-West Road, the Port Harcourt–Onne Junction improvement, the Eket bypass, and the building of the Nembe–Brass Road in Bayelsa State.
Umahi, along with Governor Monday Okpebholo, addressed the audience in Benin City while inspecting the Benin-Warri dual carriageway bypass.
Umahi stated that President Tinubu has given approval for the 100-kilometre section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway to go through Edo State.
The highway's route did not initially encompass Edo.
Additional states that are gaining from the project are Lagos (100km), Ogun and Ondo (82km), Akwa Ibom (65km), and Cross River (27km).
Umahi stated: "The President has instructed that 100 kilometers of the two-lane Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway must now go through Edo. This is a unique present for the people of Edo."
But the President, impressed by your governor's dedication to infrastructure, argued that the state should receive advantages. It's a reward for loyalty, leadership, and results.
He mentioned that Tinubu's road initiatives were developed using reinforced concrete technology, intended to endure for a period of 50 to 100 years.
He stated that the deplorable state of federal roads in Edo State was heartbreaking and intolerable.
He praised President Tinubu for his quick action and dedication to reversing years of infrastructure deterioration, stating that no driver could travel 100 kilometers on federal roads across the country without facing significant difficulties.
President Tinubu faced a challenging scenario regarding roads and bridges. It's difficult to travel 100 kilometers on federal roads without facing significant problems. However, the President is demonstrating determination, and Nigerians are already recognizing his efforts.
The Minister praised Governor Okpebholo for stepping in to address the failing sections of the Benin–Warri highway following the cancellation of a previous contract given to Levante Construction Company through the NNPC Tax Credit Scheme.
He stated that Levante laid only four kilometers of reinforced concrete pavement in stable parts of the road, ignoring the most problematic areas even after multiple alerts.
Umahi also urged Governor Okpebholo to expand his efforts by another nine kilometers, commending his openness to work together.
The agreement was ended following extended delays and subpar performance. We requested Governor Okpbholo to assume control of the initial 23 kilometers, which he quickly assigned to CBC. The standard of their work is praiseworthy.
