A violent outbreak occurred on Sunday night at a homeless shelter in Salem, Oregon , resulting in 11 individuals being stabbed just a short distance from the city's police station, as reported by officials.

The incident occurred around 7:15 p.m. at the newly opened Men's Mission of the Union Gospel Mission, which has 150 beds and sits right across from the Salem Police Department.

At least one employee was injured, according to the police confirmation.

The individual, currently under arrest, had spent the previous night at the shelter and was trying to register for another stay when the incident of violence occurred.

Authorities stated that the altercation started precisely when he was about to surrender his possessions.

"Something ... triggered him, and it appears he had a knife in his bag," stated Craig Smith, the Executive Director of the Union Gospel Mission, during an interview with NBC News.

He mentioned that the entire incident was captured on video, adding that the recording had been submitted to the investigating authorities.

The 11 individuals who were affected have been transported to a nearby medical facility suffering from different sorts of injuries, according to law enforcement officials.

Their current conditions have not been disclosed.

The shelter, launched in 2021 to supersede the organization's outdated facility from the 1960s, was created to cater to the increasing number of homeless individuals in the city.

Video clips posted on social media seem to depict the accused sprawled on the sidewalk as law enforcement agents apprehend him.

"This is quite a recent event, and investigators are collecting all the details," stated Angela Hedrick, a representative from the Salem Police Department.

The authorities haven't disclosed the suspect's identity or mentioned potential charges they might press against him.

Established in 1952 by a coalition of local Christian entrepreneurs, the Union Gospel Mission was created with the aim of assisting the city's homeless community.
