Gazipur, June 3 -- At least 20 people, including police personnel, were injured in a chase and counter-chase between RMG workers and law enforcers in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur on Tuesday morning, following the reported suicide of a factory worker.
The turmoil started following allegations that an employee at Jinnat Knitwear Limited in the Natun Bazar area, named Zakir, allegedly took his own life after being refused leave during Eid-ul-Azha.
As reported by the employees, Zakir visited the Human Resources department on Monday to ask for leave, however, his plea was denied, and he reportedly faced harsh treatment from management. This led him to leap from the roof of the factory.
Frustrated by what had happened, the employees tried to damage the factory early Tuesday morning. The police stepped in, resulting in a series of pursuits from both sides. According to bystanders, officers used batons and tear gas to break up the demonstrations led by the disgruntled workforce.

In an effort to curb further acts of aggression, extra troops from the Army, along with personnel from both the Industrial Police and conventional law enforcement agencies, have been dispatched to the region.
