On Friday, May 30, the National Police Service released a statement alerting the public about significant traffic jams between Emali and Masimba on the heavily traveled Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.

Fatalities reported after incident in Embu

In another event, a fatal accident occurred on the Embu-Nairobi Highway late Wednesday, January 15, resulting in one death and two severe injuries, according to officials.

The accident took place around 8:30 PM close to the sewage region and included a truck loaded with corn, one conveying firewood, and a bus from the Tahmeed Bus Company.

Witnesses stated that a truck moving towards Nairobi experienced brake failure and crashed into another vehicle that had been halted at a checkpoint set up by Embu county inspectors for safety checks.

One driver was discovered deceased at the location, whereas the other was swiftly taken to a local county hospital in serious condition.

The driver's identity has not been disclosed until their family members have been informed.

The flow of traffic on the highway was briefly halted during the rescue mission but was subsequently resumed.

The unfortunate incident sparked worries regarding the upkeep of vehicles and the effectiveness of traffic regulations along this heavily traveled route linking Embu town to Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.

What measures is NTSA taking to decrease road accidents?

The National Transport and Safety Authority is introducing several initiatives to reduce the frequent occurrence of road accidents within the nation. These efforts encompass routine inspections of Public Service Vehicles (PSVs), refresher courses for drivers, deployment of digital cameras to oversee speeding violations, enforcement actions against intoxicated motorists, and campaigns aimed at educating and raising awareness among the general public.

This week, authorities organized a three-day training program for PSV drivers across the four regions of Kisumu, Kakamega, Uasin Gishu, and Kisii.

Aside from receiving training to foster a culture of compliance and overall road safety, the operators were also made aware of the necessary inspections for ensuring the mechanical integrity of vehicles. They learned about updates in driving school curriculums along with advancements in regulatory technologies promoted by the Authority, including an intelligent road safety management system known as IRSMS.

The gatherings assembled participants from the local transportation and safety board members, the national police force, regional county administrators along with additional interested parties within their areas.
