A man from Bangkok was surprised when a taxi driver, who first consented to use the meter, abruptly requested a fixed fee of 200 baht and was later found to lack both a license and identification.
The event, which went viral on social media, has heightened public worries about the regulation of taxis in the city.
The traveler, who shared the experience on TikTok with the handle @auppatam1, mentioned that the driver initially started the trip using the meter as expected. But once they departed from a shopping center, the driver decided otherwise and demanded 200 baht. Upon refusal from the passenger, the driver stopped the vehicle and instructed him to leave.
Things got tense when the passenger requested to view the driver’s license or their identification for public transportation, but was informed that such documentation wasn’t accessible. In response, the driver mentioned that the car’s registration had lapsed.
After leaving the car, the passenger snapped a picture of the license plate as proof, which led to an aggressive confrontation with the driver. Eventually, the passenger contacted law enforcement.
The video rapidly gained traction online, sparking extensive backlash from internet users. Numerous individuals voiced their irritation about the inadequate policing and stated that this kind of behavior was a major factor behind why many opt against taking taxis in Bangkok.
Calls have intensified again for more rigorous inspections and consequences for driving without a license.
