On June 2, 2025, in Marrakech, Morocco, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy referred to the situation in Sudan as "the most severe humanitarian disaster globally" during a statement released on Monday. He expressed his concern over the insufficient international focus on this issue, as reported by AFP.
At an event centered on Africa held in Marrakech, Lammy emphasized the critical necessity for global intervention in a nation that has been devastated by over a year of conflict.
The conflict started in April 2023 and opposes the Sudanese Army, headed by acting leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), under the command of General Mohamed Hamdane Daglo.
“The crisis in Sudan […] is currently the worst humanitarian catastrophe in the world and it is extremely concerning,” Lammy said, responding to a question from Anglo-Sudanese businessman Mo Ibrahim, whose foundation organized the forum.
Lammy voiced his irritation about "the ambivalence, ambiguity, and notably the insufficient visibility of this crisis on a worldwide level, particularly within many parts of the Western world." He also mentioned that during his time in office, he chose to "highlight" the critical condition from the beginning.
The strife has led to tens of thousands of fatalities and forced approximately 13 million individuals from their homes, either within the country or abroad. The healthcare sector in Sudan has crumbled, infrastructures lie in shambles, and famine has been formally announced in five regions, encompassing three displacement camps in Darfur as well as portions of the Nuba Mountains area.
Lammy’s remarks reflect his worries from a gathering he organized in London back in April of last year, which centered on the humanitarian emergency in Sudan.
That gathering brought together international partners, aid organizations, and regional stakeholders to discuss urgent humanitarian access, civilian protection, and pathways to de-escalation and peace.
At the London conference, Lammy stressed the urgent requirement for more financial support for humanitarian assistance and advocated for unrestricted entry for relief agencies to assist people in dire need. Additionally, he reaffirmed the UK’s dedication to collaborating with global allies to advocate for a lasting truce and the reinstatement of a civil administration in Sudan.
