Islamabad, June 2 — The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has doubled the fare for electric buses in Islamabad from Rs50 to Rs100 per trip. This adjustment impacts all routes covered by the Orange, Green, and Blue Line buses, encompassing major sectors as well as airport services. The fare hike became effective on Sunday and influences approximately 16 different bus routes throughout the city.
The CDA states that the increase in fares is crucial for maintaining operations amidst escalating expenses. At present, it covers Rs350 per kilometer for bus operations run by the National Radio and Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC). Even with this price adjustment, the CDA will still have to offer an annual subsidy amounting to Rs2.79 billion, a decrease from the previous requirement of Rs3.66 billion under the former pricing system.
Under the updated pricing structure, revenues are anticipated to rise to Rs2.33 billion annually from Rs1.46 billion before. Nevertheless, out of the CDA’s total of 160 electric buses, roughly 120 are operational presently because of insufficient charging infrastructure. Construction of a fresh charging facility at Zero Point aims to resolve this issue.
The CDA Chairman, Mohammad Ali Randhawa, supported this initiative, stating that the aim was to ensure dependable and environmentally friendly transportation rather than placing an additional financial strain on residents. Additionally, he mentioned that they were developing specific concessionary schemes aimed at office employees, students, and elderly individuals. These plans encompass discounted one-day, seven-day, and thirty-day transit passes along with reusable card options designed for frequent travelers.
Currently, more than 85,000 daily commuters benefit from the electric buses, providing an essential remedy for traffic congestion and air quality problems in Islamabad. The Capital Development Authority (CDA) intends to enhance bus stops with updated signs and integrate real-time route information into Google Maps to aid travelers better. With urban expansion underway, the CDA seeks to increase its number of electric vehicles within the transit network and improve overall transportation infrastructure.
