Karachi, June 3 – In the aftermath of a significant tremor early Tuesday morning, more than 200 detainees fled from the Malir District Jail due to chaos caused by the quake. As stated by Sindh’s Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ghulam Nabi Memon, authorities have managed to apprehend 78 escapees thus far, with search efforts continuing.

A jailbreak occurred as prison authorities moved approximately 2,000 detainees from their quarters for a roll call following seismic activity. Amidst the confusion, many inmates started fleeing, and they succeeded in escaping even though FC members fired extensively overhead. It is said that about 213 prisoners got away during this incident.

The scenario escalated into violence when prisoners confronted the guards, seizing their arms and opening fire. During this turmoil, one inmate lost his life, and another five sustained injuries. Furthermore, three members of the FC suffered wounds and were transported to a private medical facility. In response, rangers and law enforcement swiftly initiated a coordinated effort, resulting in the apprehension of 73 escapees from different regions, alongside nine additional individuals suspected of involvement.

After the breakout, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah voiced his concerns and criticized the choice to assemble prisoners on an open field as a bad call. He instructed the formation of an inquiry panel to look into the matter and hold accountable those responsible officials.

In the meantime, Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar went to the prison, initiated a comprehensive search operation, and stressed the importance of enhanced local surveillance and intelligence efforts to apprehend the remaining fugitives. Additionally, he called for prompt measures to secure the region and increase patrolling throughout Karachi.

The earthquake not only breached the prison walls, providing avenues for escapes, but also instilled fear amongst the prisoners. Malir SSP verified that a section of the jail wall crumbled because of seismic-induced fissures. Following this incident, security personnel have sealed off the region, shut down both ends of the National Highway, and deployed roadblocks throughout the city with the aim of tracking down and apprehending the escaped individuals.
