The Chiang Mai Zoo is getting ready to welcome two new pandas from China.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra announced at an event marking the 50th anniversary of Thai-Chinese diplomatic ties on May 28 that the couple is anticipated later this year.
Associate Professor Dr. Jessada Yonawanik, who serves as the chairman of the Zoological Park Organisation of Thailand (ZPO), guided a group on Sunday through various sections within the zoo located in Muang district. Their objective was to assess potential spaces for developing panda habitats and exhibit areas.
Mr. Jessada stated that the anticipated expenditure for building the new facilities was 110 million baht, and he added that the design phase has already commenced.
He mentioned that the space needs to be adequately extensive and authentic enough to ensure the pandas can thrive and exhibit their typical behavior.
The zoo director, Wutthichai Muangman, stated that the facility is prepared to adhere to instructions provided by the government, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, as well as the ZPO.
The authorities vowed to improve the management even further compared to when the Chinese pandas Xuang Xuan and Lin Hui resided at the facility. During their stay, these two animals drew more than seven million visitors and sired a female offspring named Lin Bing in 2009.
Xuang Xuang passed away in 2019 at the young age of 19, and Lin Hui died in 2023 at the age of 21.
In 2013, Lin Bing was sent back to the Giant Panda Research and Conservation Center in Chengdu, China, under a joint accord.
