Bhola, June 6 — More than 60 passengers who were traveling back home for Eid found themselves stranded when their trawler started drifting in the center of the Meghna River due to an engine failure on Friday morning. Their rescue came thanks to the prompt action taken by the Bangladesh Coast Guard, which prevented what could have been a serious accident.
Lieutenant Commander Harun-ur-Rashid, who serves as the Media Officer for the Coast Guard South Zone, stated that the accident took place approximately at 11 am close to the Majher Char region. A trawler, which was unlawfully carrying people from Lakshmipur to Bhola’s Ilisha terminal, stopped working in the middle of the river with about 60 passengers aboard.
A single passenger succeeded in notifying the Coast Guard. Consequently, a rescue squad was promptly sent to the site. This team effectively saved all 60 passengers as well as the two boat operators—making the overall count of individuals rescued 62—and conveyed everyone securely to the Ilisha terminal.

After the rescue operation, the fishing vessel along with its crew was transferred to the Ilisha River Police for potential legal proceedings because they had been illegally transporting passengers.
He noted that the Coast Guard keeps up with routine patrols to safeguard coastal and riverside populations. Moreover, as Eid-ul-Azha 2025 approaches, the Coast Guard is diligently striving to uphold security and maintain law and order on waterways, and this work will persist into the coming days.
