On Saturday, Kisoro buzzed with energy as the 2025 edition of the Virunga Gorilla Marathon became the main attraction.

Drawing nearly 1,000 participants from Uganda and surrounding areas, the marathon with the theme "Running for Conservation and Climate Action" served as a gathering point for athletes of all levels.

Starting with the top-tier participants competing in the full 42 km marathon and the half 21 km race, all the way to the leisurely joggers joining in for the 6 km and 10 km events.

Commencing at the renowned Mayor’s Gardens in Kisoro Municipality, participants ran through stunning highland scenery, taking in vistas of the Virunga volcanoes, Lake Mutanda, and verdant areas adjacent to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

The event highlighted how Kisoro uniquely combines nature, adventure, and culture, making it truly shine as a jewel in Uganda’s tourism landscape.

"We are delighted with the attendance and support," stated Kenneth Kamukama, who was one of the main organizers.

He stated, "This marathon isn’t merely an event; it’s a festival honoring preservation, heritage, and community progress. We’re thrilled to leverage athletics to boost tourism and foster sustainable living in Kisoro."

The money collected at this event will be used for various local community initiatives such as tree planting, aiming to plant 10,000 trees.

Several running competitions feature on Uganda's event schedule, with the Virunga Marathon currently experiencing growth.

Despite this, it has rapidly become the largest yearly sporting and tourist event in the Kigezi sub-region. This year’s iteration saw heightened engagement from participants, greater media attention, and enhanced community involvement.

There wasn’t just serious business on the road; runners and the community ended the evening with a lively "Neon Rave." This after-party experience was brought to life by Tusker Lite, which sponsors the marathon.

"Tusker Lite aims to deliver energy and remarkable experiences to our customers," stated Mercy Atwongyeire, Project Manager at UBL.

She stated, "We enjoy making memorable appearances, particularly at events where we can craft incredible experiences for our dynamic and expressive customers."

The Neon Rave was a dazzling finale to a magnificent marathon."

This significant achievement has led the organizers to announce their intentions to broaden the marathon’s scope even more in the coming year. They also aim to reinforce community collaborations and enhance their environmental objectives.

This growth was accompanied by numerous corporate partners joining in, which the organizers view as a sign of trust in the yearly event.

Some of the supporters for the event include Stanbic Bank, Tusker Lite, Pepsi, Uganda Wildlife Authority, Uganda Tourism Board, and the Kisoro District Local Government.
