The southern coastline of Malta offers a captivating blend of historical locations and stunning views with its towering cliffs, hidden sea caves, and monumental sacred sites.
At Blue Grotto, a gem along Malta’s southern shore, the ocean has carved intricate archways out of the rocks, allowing sunlight to cast an azure glow over the crystal-clear water beneath. Travel via the coastal route past this scenic section until you reach the Blue Wall and Grotto Viewpoint; here, perched high above, you’ll be treated to sweeping vistas spanning the whole bay. Afterward, descend below the cliffs to visit the quaint fishing village of Wied iż-Żurrieq where boats can be rented for exploring the numerous marine caves dotting the coastline—each one sparkling with captivating light effects as they catch the sunbeams.
Travel westward to discover the ruins of Ħagar Qim and Mnajdra, remnants from an ancient civilization. These structures feature massive stones hewn more than five millennia ago, showcasing remarkable engineering prowess; notably, one stone spans six meters wide by three meters tall! Constructed to align with celestial events like solstices, Mnajdra can be accessed via a scenic route through the heathland where you'll have sweeping views of the distant Mediterranean Sea. Simply spectacular!
