On Monday, at least ten passengers sustained injuries after the brakes of a tour bus transporting Indian exchange students malfunctioned, leading to a collision with a roadside utility pole along Phahon Yothin Road near Kor Por Aor Junction in Bangkok.
The accident took place at 11 am on the outgoing lane of the street in Sai Mai district. Rescuers from Bangkhen Fire and Rescue promptly arrived at the location as reported.
The bus, operated by the ATS Travel Group, was travelling from Suvarnabhumi airport in Samut Prakan province to the Asian Institute of Technology in Khlong Luang district of Pathum Thani province, according to media reports.
The driver, known solely as Nikom, aged 45, stated that there were 45 Indian students aboard.
Approximately 200 meters prior to reaching the site of the incident, he began applying the brakes upon noticing a traffic signal up ahead. Nevertheless, the braking system malfunctioned.
He explained that to prevent colliding with cars stopped at the red light, he chose to swerve onto the side of the road, which led to an accident with a utility pole. Soon afterward, smoke started billowing from the vehicle’s engine.
It took around 30 minutes for the rescue team to assist a guide who was stuck near the left front part of the bus. The remaining passengers managed to exit safely through the emergency exits and open windows.
According to investigators from Sai Mai police station, ten exchange students were hurt and immediately taken to a nearby hospital.
The fire and rescue services managed to bring the smoke under control, while the police are conducting an investigation to ascertain the precise cause of the incident.
