Following the footsteps of France and Belgium, the United Kingdom has also prohibited single-use electronic cigarettes. In response, specialists in Morocco from both health and environmental fields are urging their administration to implement similar restrictions, highlighting increasing worries about public well-being and ecological harm.
The usage of disposable e-cigarettes has surged dramatically among young people in Morocco, notably within school premises, say specialists who view this trend with alarm and concern over inadequate regulation. There is growing demand for legal measures to tackle what is increasingly referred to as a "stealth epidemic."
Ayoub Krir, who serves as the president of the Oxygene pour l'Environnement et la Santé organization and is also an expert in climate and sustainable development, cautioned about the significant environmental risks associated with single-use electronic cigarettes. According to him, these devices contribute to air contamination and improperly discarded lithium-ion batteries can ignite when they come into contact with regular trash.
These gadgets pose a significant threat," Krir stated. "They have an adverse effect on the environment, impacting all forms of life and exacerbating the strain on our already stressed ecological systems.
Krir pressed Moroccan legislators to implement stringent laws prohibiting the sale and distribution of such items, contending that not doing so could undermine the nation's comprehensive efforts against smoking.
In terms of public health, Dr. Tayeb Hamdi, who researches health policies and systems, cautioned that e-cigarettes pose significant risks to the well-being of Moroccan youth and teenagers. He observed that tobacco corporations are intensifying their efforts to market these products towards younger audiences.
“Facing declining prospects due to growing global awareness, tobacco companies are pushing e-cigarettes as a so-called safer alternative,” Hamdi said. “But there is no solid scientific evidence supporting that claim.”
Hamdi stressed the critical necessity for Morocco to implement precautionary steps already adopted in other nations aimed at safeguarding its youth populace.
The experts emphasized that urgent steps must be taken, not just for safeguarding public health but also for maintaining environmental integrity. They urged Moroccan legislators to expedite the process of enacting a country-wide prohibition on single-use electronic cigarettes.
If implemented, this measure would put Morocco in line with an increasing number of nations that prioritize health and environmental safety over industrial concerns.
