Pakistan, June 2 -- Gilgit-Baltistan has reported its first case of wild poliovirus for 2025. The case was detected in Diamer district, as confirmed by the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health on Monday. This brings the national polio case count to 11 so far this year.
The report came soon after the end of the third national polio immunization drive, held between May 26 and June 1. The Polio Eradication Program stated that this initiative focused on 159 regions and successfully vaccinated more than 45 million kids below the age of five throughout the nation.
Responding to the continuing issue, President Asif Ali Zardari strongly appealed for public support. He encouraged parents to receive vaccinators warmly and make sure all children get the essential polio vaccinations. Additionally, he asked teachers, religious figures, and media organizations to assist in combating false information about vaccines.
"The polio vaccine is safe, effective, and our best weapon," said President Zardari in his message marking the launch of the campaign. He emphasized the importance of community support in ending the disease and creating a polio-free Pakistan.
Even with substantial initiatives and extensive outreach, polio persists in vulnerable regions. According to health officials, maintaining constant watchfulness, building public confidence, and ensuring prompt immunizations are crucial for eradicating the virus completely across the nation.
