The German authorities have apprehended a 72-year-old individual regarding an incident where a blaze claimed at least three lives at the Marien Hospital in Hamburg during the night.

A 72-year-old man was detained by the police for his alleged involvement in setting fire to the Marien Hospital located in the northern German city of Hamburg.
According to law enforcement, the individual hospitalized might also be regarded as a potential suspect. This conclusion comes following a blaze that resulted in fatalities for three individuals and left at least 34 more wounded.
It is reported that the suspect will appear before a judge on Monday.
Earlier reports indicated that 16 people sustained severe injuries, with at least one individual in critical condition.
What information do we have regarding the fire?
The blaze began just after midnight in one of the structures at Marien Hospital within the Hohenfelde district of the city.
A representative from the fire department stated that heavy smoke subsequently spread across all levels of the structure.
Initially, the cause of the fire remained unclear. It seemingly erupted in a chamber within the geriatric care section located on the building’s lower level.
A significant number of emergency responders were dispatched to manage the blaze and ensure the patients at the medical facility reached safety.
Patients evacuated
Early on Sunday morning, officials announced that the fire had been brought under control.
Officials stated that individuals present in the impacted structure have been relocated.
A portion of the wounded individuals received care at the hospital's emergency room, whereas some were transported to adjacent medical facilities.
