In an incident involving a 15-passenger Ford Transit traveling from Accra to Aflao, a crash occurred with a dump truck along the Sogakope-Akatsi route on Thursday. This accident resulted in the deaths of 10 individuals and left several others injured.
Nine individuals perished immediately, with the tenth succumbing to their injuries soon after at the hospital.
Staff from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) hurried to the accident site around 10 pm to free those trapped and recover the deceased from the rubble.
The Commander for the Akatsi-South Municipality of the Ghana National Fire Service, Divisional Officer III, Mr Alderson Savour Coffie, partially blames the tragic fatalities on excessive speed and reckless passing, especially during nighttime when visibility decreases, making it challenging to avoid accidents and protect people and assets.
Mr. Coffie stated that the incident might have been avoided if the operator of the Ford Transit delivery van, bearing the license plate VD 468-22, had followed traffic rules and regulations.
In an interview with The Ghanaian Times conducted in Akatsi, Mr. Coffie highlighted that the incident could have been avoided considering its impact. He mentioned that members of the service had to rescue the nine passengers who perished instantly, which included the driver of the 15-seat vehicle.
He pointed out that taking into account the consequences, the fatalities and destruction indicated the incident resulted from negligent driving and disregard for traffic laws. He consequently urged motorists to follow road safety guidelines to safeguard people and assets.
Mr. Coffie additionally stated that initial inquiries indicated the driver was traveling from Accra toward Akatsi and attempted to pass four cars within his own lane. He subsequently lost control and crashed into an oncoming dump truck, which led to fatalities and significant damage to both life and property.

The 10 individuals who lost their lives in the accident had their remains taken to Sogakope District Hospital and Comboni Hospital.
Superintendent Turkson pointed out that among those who died, there were nine men and one woman, which included an allegedly male nurse from Asamankese. However, she emphasized that the identities of the deceased should remain undisclosed until their families have retrieved their remains.
