The Hong Kong Water Supplies Department (WSD) has stated that they are looking into the presence of black particles discovered in the potable water at a public housing complex. They have also confirmed that the water remains safe for consumption.
Roger Wong, who leads the water supply department, stated on RTHK on Monday that officials were informed on Friday about residents from Queen’s Hill Estate in Fanling finding unknown black particles in their tap water.
He stated that the WSD promptly inspected the government pipelines and the water tanks at the housing complex.
The investigation revealed that the government pipelines supplying water to Queen’s Hill Estate were in satisfactory condition, with no black particles observed. However, black particles were discovered on the filters of the estate’s water tanks.
Wong stated that the department gathered water samples for analysis and instructed the estate to cleanse and refill the water tanks.
"We took water samples both prior to and following the estate cleaning their water tanks. The test outcomes for each sample indicated that the water was clear and safe for consumption," he stated.
Following several days of cleaning and rinsing the water tanks, the black particles ought to be eliminated.
He stated that an inquiry has been initiated to determine the nature of the black particles and how they ended up in the potable water supply at Queen’s Hill Estate.
Black particles have also been discovered in several other public housing areas," he stated. "These particles typically consist of non-reactive materials and should not pose any risk to human health.
HKFP has reached out to the WSD to inquire about the test results concerning the black particles.
Edward Lau, a legislator supporting the establishment, said On Sunday, Facebook posted that black particles were discovered in the drinking water at Queen’s Hill Estate back in 2022. However, these contaminants were eliminated following an order from the Housing Department for the estate to conduct a comprehensive cleaning of its water storage tanks.
Lau pressed the Housing Department to urgently cleanse all water tanks at Queen’s Hill Estate and requested a thorough inspection of every pipeline within the complex.
