HAMAMATSU, Shizuoka — On June 2, police apprehended a 47-year-old man suspected of leaving two children unattended in a car that plunged off a bridge and landed on the shoulder of an expressway in this central Japanese city.
The Hamamatsu Chuo Police Department apprehended Akiya Kurebayashi, who claims to be jobless and resides in the city of Omaezaki within Shizuoka Prefecture, for allegedly breaching the Road Traffic Law by operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s license and not reporting an incident.
Kurebayashi is alleged to have collided with a guardrail while operating a motor vehicle without proper licensing on a local street in Hamamatsu's Chuo Ward around 1:30 p.m. on June 1st. The car plunged off the Hikumano Bridge onto the embankment of the Tomei Expressway; however, Kurebayashi reportedly departed the area without notifying law enforcement of the incident.
None of the two kids in the car sustained injuries. The driver abandoned the vehicle along with the children and escaped prior to the arrival of law enforcement, though he was apprehended in the same district the next morning. It was reported that his driving privileges had been rescinded a few years earlier.
The authorities have not stated whether the accused has confessed to the allegations or explained how he was connected to the kids discovered within the vehicle. They continue to examine the specific reasons behind the incident.
