The residents of Namugongo in the Wakiso District are expressing worries about the strict traffic regulations imposed by the police prior to the Uganda Martyrs' Day festivities. They claim these measures have trapped them, making it impossible for them to reach their residences.
This week’s new traffic plan has caused significant disruptions for travel in and around Namugongo. Motorists are now compelled to use longer routes as detours just to get to their local destinations.

On June 1, the police released a traffic advisory announcing limited entry to multiple zones such as Naalya Roundabout, Kireka Trading Center, Bweyogerere, Seeta, Agenda 2000, Namugongo-Butto-Kyobe Road, Namugongo-Ssemambo Road, and Kyaliwajjala Trading Center.
Mr. Michael Kananura, who serves as the Community Liaison Officer at the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, cautioned that any vehicles found parked unattended along the restricted paths will face towing at the owner's expense and may incur penalties.
"We strongly encourage all drivers to adhere to the directions provided by traffic officials and demonstrate utmost self-control and tolerance while on the roads. It is advisable to schedule your trips ahead of time to prevent avoidable hold-ups and disruptions," he stated.
Traffic Advisory Summary: Uganda Martyrs' Day – June 3, 2025
Kireka–Kyaliwajjala road: Single-direction flow towards the event location.
Kyaliwajjala–Naalya interchange: One-way toward Kyaliwajjala.
Kyaliwajjala to Catholic Church: Reserved for pedestrians (keep right); left side for VVIPS and emergency vehicles.
VIP access: Vehicles with red stickers should park at Namugongo Boarding Primary School using Ssemambo Road. Members of the Protestant Church VIPs should enter via Butto–Kyobe Road.
Foreign pilgrims: Vehicles with blue stickers should be dropped off at Kyaliwajjala; park at Vienna College.
Medical services: Green stickers required.
Service providers: Violet stickers should be received by midnight on June 3; delays will not be permitted.
Pilgrims from specific regions: Dedicated parking zones for Hillside Nursery and Primary School, Kiira Town Council playground, and the garden of the mayor of Kiira Municipality.
General public: Parking is not allowed at the Catholic or Protestant shrines. Taxis without authorization and motorcycles may be seized.
