New Delhi, June 2 (dpa/GNA) — According to local news sources, at least 34 individuals have lost their lives due to flooding and landslides in northeastern India.

NDTV and other Indian news channels reported on Monday that the flooding was due to continuous heavy rainfall starting at the close of May.

Assam along with six other states in the world's most populated nation has been severely affected. Meteorological officials anticipate continued heavy rain until mid-week.

The rising waters submerged many streets and farmlands, wreaking havoc on structures such as bridges and homes. Thousands of individuals found themselves taking refuge in temporary shelters throughout the night.

Initially, the complete scope of the destruction remained unknown. The PTI news organization reported that at least eight individuals were confirmed deceased in Assam due to flooding and mudslides.

In the state of Arunachal Pradesh, a vehicle was hit by sliding earth and debris on a motorway, according to The Indian Express newspaper. All seven occupants, who belonged to two families, were killed.

This year, the monsoon season started sooner than expected in certain areas of India.

Floods and mudflows frequently occur during the rainy season, typically extending up to September. While this precipitation is essential for vegetation and farming, it poses significant risks to human safety as well.
