The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has verified the tragic death of a commercial motorcycle rider resulting from a road incident in the Ikorodu area of Lagos.
The report indicated that the victim lost control of the motorcycle and collided with a fully laden articulated lorry carrying flour on the Sabo Onimalu route, heading towards Itamaga, early Sunday morning.
The disturbing event occurred when a commercial motorcyclist, allegedly speeding out of control, unfortunately crashed into a heavily laden articulated lorry carrying flour.
"Preliminary findings from an initial on-scene investigation indicate that the driver experienced a sudden and severe brake failure, which left him unable to regain control of the vehicle. Consequently, he crashed into the back of a moving trailer, resulting in instant death," stated Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of Public Affairs at the enlightenment department of LASTMA.
Taofiq elaborated that the body of the dead motorcyclist was discovered underneath the truck but has been removed and turned over to his relatives who arrived at the incident site following calls from fellow riders.
He mentioned that the LASTMA officials, arriving swiftly as the initial emergency responders, quickly and resolutely acted to control the resulting pandemonium and safeguard the site of the incident.
He revealed that during the operation, they found out the driver of the truck had run away in an attempt to avoid accountability.
However, he mentioned that the driver was subsequently apprehended by LASTMA officials and promptly transferred to the Nigeria Police Force at the Shagamu Road Division, Ikorodu, for additional inquiry and possible legal action pursuant to applicable traffic and criminal laws.
As stated, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased and urged the leaders of commercial motorcycle operator associations statewide to enhance awareness programs for their members in order to boost road safety.
He also reiterated the Lagos State Government’s policy on the restricted movement of commercial motorcycles along some corridors, highways and bridges, urging total conformity in the overriding interest of public safety and order.
Extremely urgent is the necessity for commercial motorcycle operators to take on more accountability by ensuring regular maintenance inspections of their vehicles, particularly critical parts like the braking system.
"The tragic and unnecessary loss of lives due to these avoidable mechanical issues is deeply regretted and deemed wholly unacceptable," Bakare-Oki said in the statement.
