New Delhi [India], June 3 (ANI): A student from a school has filed a petition with the National Green Tribunal ( NGT ), emphasizing the detrimental impacts of airborne dust Generated during street sweeping and its effect on public health. According to the petition, extensive feeding and reproduction of pigeons throughout Delhi-NCR lead to an overabundance of excrement collecting on sidewalks, walkways, and traffic islands.

Once these zones are swept, harmful particles from old excrement become airborne as dust, adding more contaminants to the surroundings and presenting considerable health hazards.

The applicant argues that being exposed to these contaminants may result in severe respiratory illnesses, such as hypersensitivity pneumonitis—a disorder causing inflammation and scarring of the lungs along with problems with breathing.

Recognizing the seriousness of the issue, the Principal Bench, led by Justice Prakash Shrivastava (Chairperson) and Dr. A. Senthil Vel (Expert Member), pointed out that the petition brings up significant issues related to adherence to environmental regulations.

On May 29, 2025, the tribunal issued notices to the Government of NCT and other relevant authorities, directing them to submit their responses via affidavit. The case has been scheduled for further proceedings in October.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is apparently contemplating a plan to prohibit designated pigeon-feeding zones throughout the city because of worries about potential health hazards linked to the increasing number of pigeons. Should this initiative be implemented, it might result in shutting down well-known feeding locations typically situated on sidewalks, traffic circles, and street corners. Officials have raised issues related to both ecological impact and community wellbeing, specifically mentioning air pollution caused by pigeon-related debris. pigeon droppings , serving as crucial factors for the proposal.
