To prevent yet another nationwide catastrophe, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has initiated the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC), a collaborative hub designed to oversee flood conditions, gather accurate data and information, and manage resource allocation and distribution for addressing the 2025 floods affecting all 36 states along with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In a statement provided to Nigerian Tribune on Sunday, it was revealed that activating the NEOC is one of NEMA’s preemptive strategies aimed at efficiently handling the anticipated 2025 flooding crisis.

The center started operating during the weekend, initially focusing on addressing the Mokwa flood situation. So far, NEMA’s Rescue and Operations Team has retrieved 151 corpses, impacted 503 families and 264 homes, and led to the displacement of 3,018 people.

"The National Emergency Management Agency, along with other emergency response organizations, is stepping up its efforts to locate and save individuals who are unaccounted for and to offer aid to families impacted by flooding in Mokwa, Niger State," the organization declared.

On Saturday, May 31, 2025, NEMA’s quick action and rehabilitation squad carried out a ceremonial delivery of aid supplies to those impacted. They subsequently transferred responsibility for ongoing distributions to the Local Government Authority (LGA), the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and the community head (Sarkin Hausawa).

The organization has pointed out that it is closely tracking and aiding the complete recuperation of patients who were first admitted to hospitals, with many of them having since received treatment and been released.

Additionally, the damage to two township roads and their bridges due to the floods has adversely affected vehicle traffic and local economic activities in the region.

To reduce the risk of waterborne illnesses often linked to flooding, NEMA has dispatched portable water treatment facilities to supply clean drinking water for household needs in the impacted areas, alongside various sanitation measures.

"In keeping with President Bola Tinubu’s directives, everyone is working together to make sure that all required assistance is given to the town during these challenging times as things gradually return to normal," the agency confirmed.
