The U.S. mission in Nigeria has conveyed sympathy to those affected by the severe flooding that hit Niger State recently, which led to at least 151 fatalities and forced more than 3,000 people from their homes.
On Monday, the US Mission issued a statement commending the relentless work of emergency personnel who have been striving to deliver aid and mitigate the impact of the catastrophe.
The flooding has led to a substantial humanitarian emergency, resulting in more than 260 houses being demolished and crucial infrastructure, such as local roadways and important bridges in Mokwa and Raba, extensively harmed.
Following the emergency, President Bola Tinubu sent an elite team to the impacted regions to evaluate the destruction and assist with the continuing aid efforts.
The US Mission issued a statement saying, "We at the US Mission are profoundly troubled by the reports of last week's catastrophic flooding in Niger State. As people face significant losses and challenges, we extend our sympathies to everyone mourning the death of family members, forced from their homes and work, or finding it difficult to secure refuge."
Government authorities have requested extra federal and global aid to handle the developing emergency. As the impacted areas grapple with the consequences of the catastrophe, the US Mission has expressed sympathy and offered assistance.
