The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has stepped up its country-wide initiative to combat fuel scooping, cautioning citizens about the perilous activity of gathering leaked fuel at locations where tanker accidents have occurred.
The Director-General of the organization, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, issued this caution when he met with representatives from the Tanker Drivers Association at their location in Moniya, within the Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State.
According to an official announcement, the gathering was a component of continuous initiatives aimed at preventing tanker-induced blasts and lowering death rates on Nigeria's highways.
Issa-Onilu voiced significant worry about the frequent occurrences of oil tankers causing accidents, noting that these events have resulted in unnecessary deaths and imposed substantial strain on emergency services and medical facilities nationwide.
Expressing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's worry about the increasing number of fatalities from these accidents, the head of NOA reaffirmed the Federal Government’s dedication to enhancing road safety measures and averting additional disasters.
He encouraged tanker drivers to assume individual accountability for safety by rigorously adhering to traffic rules, refraining from excessive speed, and making sure their vehicles are well-maintained prior to starting any journey.
'Issa-Onilu stated that transporting extremely combustible materials demands greater levels of care and upkeep.'
'Thorough inspections of vehicles can greatly help in avoiding these fatal crashes,' he noted.
The head of NOA also revealed that the Federal Government is implementing measures to restore vital road structures throughout the nation. The objective is to decrease traffic accidents and establish better safety standards for drivers as well as walkers.
At the event, Dr. Olukemi Afolayan, who serves as the NOA director for Oyo State, highlighted that the organization has intensified public education initiatives via radio programs and community interactions aimed at increasing awareness about the risks associated with fuel scooping.
She advised inhabitants to stay away from the fatal allure of going near accident sites to gather fuel, stressing that these acts frequently lead to devastating blasts.
NOA's 'Reject Fuel Scooping' initiative keeps gaining momentum as part of larger efforts aimed at enhancing nationwide safety programs.
