• EXPLORE FURTHER: TUI introduces new routes from UK airport to beautiful Mediterranean island

More than 50,000 people have paid for a flight to nowhere.

It could seem odd, but this flight — which departs from Heathrow and returns about 40 minutes later - specifically crafted to assist individuals who have a fear of flying.

The flight, which is operated by British Airways It is part of the airline's 'Confident Flying' program.

BA states that their 'transformative, single-day program provides you with the necessary knowledge and skills' required to 'conquer your fear of flying.'

In a TikTok Video featuring travel experts provided by the website @thepointsguy explains that the course leverages the expertise of both pilots and psychologists to assist participants in conquering their fear.

It discloses that the course begins at an airport hotel conference room where senior British Airways pilots deliver a presentation.

The Points Guy says the pilots will 'explain how safely planes fly, how pilots operate them and the rigorous selection and regular training pilots must undertake to take to the skies'.

Attendees will then be joined by a clinical psychologist who will 'explain how fears of flying develop and can be managed'.

There will then be a 'guided meditation' and 'relaxation exercise' to 'soothe course attendees into a deep calm'.

The trained personnel will subsequently lead the participants through security and assist them in boarding a dedicated British Airways charter flight, as stated by The Points Guy.

During the flight, experts will clarify each noise and 'jolt' to assist participants in staying relaxed.

BA says: 'During the flight, an extra pilot on the flight deck gives a running commentary explaining all the various phases of the flight and just what is happening.

'This aspect of the course has been found to be very reassuring and valuable, helping people overcome their fear of flying.'

Does it work?

British Airways reports that over the past three decades, more than 50,000 individuals have completed this program, achieving a remarkable success rate of 98 percent.

The main cost for the airline’s program is £399, and participants will enjoy a brief flight from Heathrow towards evening time.

The cost of their premium course is £1,899 and covers two trips on British Airways' domestic routes.

BA explains: 'Normally the "turnaround" time on the ground at the destination is less than an hour, with an opportunity for a flight deck visit.'

Who is the course for?

BA says that the course will help those with a fear of flying whether that's due to a lack of control, claustrophobia, a fear of heights or of falling.
