Divers from both park authorities and the Navy are examining corals at Mu Ko Surin National Park due to worries about potential damage from a submerged ship originating from Myanmar.
On Monday, the Thai Maritime Enforcement Command Center responsible for the Andaman Coast reported that divers from both the marine park and the Royal Thai Navy were sent to assess the state of the corals near the site where the cargo vessel MV Ayar Linn crashed on Sunday.
The boat from Myanmar, carrying seven people, departed from a dock in Ranong province on Thursday loaded with various consumer items destined for ports in Myanmar. While heading towards Mergui following a halt in Kawthaung, the crew noticed water leaking into the bilge area of the ship. This led skipper Aung Ngwe Soe to navigate the vessel toward the closest shore.
A vessel with a gross tonnage of 100 tonnes ran aground near Jak Bay, which is situated north of Mu Ko Surin in the Khura Buri district within Phang nga Province. Eventually, the ship submerged underwater, causing its cargo to drift in the ocean.
The center stated that the vessel contained 7,700 liters of diesel for operating the engine; however, this fuel was not seeping into the ocean. The primary worry revolved around potential harm to the coral due to the ship lying on the seabed.
