On Tuesday, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake hit a seaside town in Turkey, triggering widespread fear among locals, according to officials. Numerous people were reportedly hurt as they fled their residences by leaping through windows or off balconies. Tragically, a teenage victim succumbed to injuries sustained and was hospitalized afterward.
There were no significant damages recorded.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency reported that the earthquake struck at 2:17 a.m., with its epicenter located in the Mediterranean Sea near the tourist destination of Marmaris. The tremor was also noticed in adjacent areas such as Greece’s Rhodes Island, rousing numerous people from their slumber.
The Turkish Interior Minister, Ali Yerlikaya, stated on X that a 14-year-old girl was admitted to the hospital where she later passed away due to what he described as an anxiety attack. The presence of any pre-existing health issues remained unclear.
About 70 other individuals received treatment for their injuries after leaping from windows or balconies out of fear, he mentioned. He also noted that there were no reports of structural damage to the buildings involved.
In Rhodes, both visitors and locals remained outdoors for several hours near their accommodations and houses following the tremor, though local authorities reported that the destruction was minimal.
It is probably due to the fact that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 60 kilometers (37 miles), as stated by Efthymios Lekkas, who leads Greece's Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization.
"A broader region experienced the effects of this event... however, it won't cause major surface impacts," Lekkas stated during an appearance on state-owned television.
Turkey is located above significant tectonic fault lines, resulting in common seismic activity.
In 2023, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 resulted in over 53,000 fatalities in Turkey. The disaster also led to extensive damage or destruction of numerous structures across 11 regions in the south and southeast. Additionally, about 6,000 people lost their lives in the northern areas of adjacent Syria due to this event.
