
A rail link between Kent and Surrey will shut down for more than seven days in August to reinforce a slope that had earlier caved in due to a landslip.
Network Rail has announced that trains running between Redhill and Tonbridge will be halted from August 16th to August 25th for essential repairs to the Bough Beech embankment, which suffered a collapse on March 29, 2024.
A representative from Network Rail stated that the project aims to tackle "continuing issues" with the retaining wall after its failure and prior mudslides in the region.
During the shutdown, rail replacement buses will be operational on the line managed by Southern.
The closure of Caterfield Lane in Edenbridge started in May and will remain closed until August 1st to enable engineers to set up a working platform for their operations, as stated by Network Rail.
In April 2024, the queue stayed shut down for over two weeks due to maintenance work.
The new project involves adding additional steel panels along the riverbank, alongside the installation of over 200 "soil nails." These soil nails will typically extend approximately 6 meters deep into the earth.
During the work, low-lying plants and certain trees will also be cleared from the area, Network Rail mentioned additionally.
The railway company stated: "Whenever landslides occur, delays inevitably follow. Unlike cars on a road, which can steer around minor obstacles, trains cannot easily dodge debris on the tracks."
