Sylhet, June 3 -- Although heavy rainfall has subsided in Sylhet onrush of upstream water continues to swell the district's rivers, keeping several areas waterlogged and increasing the risk of further flooding.
As reported by the Sylhet branch of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), both the Surma and Kushiyara rivers exceeded the danger level at four locations by 9 am on Tuesday.
The Surma and Kushiyara rivers are flowing above the danger mark in Sylhet, raising concerns about potential flooding.
At Kanaighat, Surma River had risen to 13.69 meters, which is 0.94 meters over the danger mark. In Amalshid, the Kushiyara stood at 17.36 meters, exceeding the warning threshold by 1.96 meters. Additionally, in Sheola, it measured 13.52 meters, just slightly higher than the alert level by 0.47 meters; meanwhile, in Fenchuganj, the water reached 9.98 meters, also surpassing safety levels by 0.53 meters.
The water levels at each of the four locations increased from those measured on Monday.
Although no additional regions flooded on Tuesday, numerous low-lying villages and roads in five unions within Zakiganj Upazila stayed underwater.
The local authorities mentioned that the waters had retreated from the marketplace region by daybreak on Tuesday.
In addition to the Surma and Kushiyara, the water levels have risen in the Dholai, Lova, Sari, and Dawki rivers as well.
The only decline in water levels was observed at the Sari-Goyain River.
Various upazilas such as Gowainghat, Companiganj, Fenchuganj, Kanaighat, Jaintiapur, Beanibazar, and Osmaninagar have experienced flooding.
Across Zakiganj upazila, numerous breaks in the embankments alongside the Kushiyara River resulted in the flooding of several villages and houses, with many countryside paths submerged underwater, trapping residents.
The Zakiganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Mahbubur Rahman, stated that the precise count of impacted villages and individuals has not been determined as of now.
In the upazila, five labor associations have experienced partial flooding, and nine individuals from two households have sought refuge in two nearby centers, according to him.

At Beanibazar UNO Golam Mustafa Munna stated that they have established a control room and readied 68 shelters in anticipation of potential flooding.
"While this isn’t considered a major flooding event just yet, several villages have experienced impacts because of breaks in the embankments," he stated, noting that BGB personnel were using sandbags to fix the breached areas.
The Sylhet Meteorological Office reported that the district received 26.6 millimeters of rain between Monday morning at 6 am and Tuesday morning at 6 am.
Deepak Ranjan Das, the WDB Executive Engineer for Sylhet, mentioned that the continuous influx of water from India is still leading to an increase in river water levels even though the rain has subsided.
He stated that if there isn't any significant new rain, the conditions might return to normal within the coming days.
